It's a Wednesday and the 8th interview has just wrapped up, I check my email and have another 6 people who have applied for the open position of graphic designer - along with emails that I need to address for everyday work as well. It's a common scene for a growing brand. But who do you hire? It's an interesting time in the U.S. jobs market. There's a large number of applicants looking for remote work, fractal based out-sourcing companies looking to get in at a bottom dollar price, competing salary battles for mid-level talent, terms like "quiet quitting" and "the great resignation" stirring headline headaches, and beyond all else there is an uneasy economic outlook.
Hire like a Great company
One thing in business is that you can never control the economy nor the market - it's up, it's down, and companies with solid business practices tend to stick around. Thankfully for the LED lighting industry all signs point to expectant growth with a big focus on retrofit projects, U.S. manufactured fixtures, and increased efficiency in lighting controls. Ticking off these three boxes should keep most LED brands with sound business strategies prosperous.
So if that's the case - then how should a brand hire on new employees? Think like a "Great" company! In the best-selling non-fiction book "Good to Great" by author Jim Collins he highlights that the top performing CEOs all approach their team with the same mentality, the idea is that you want to start with the type of people you want around you first before steering the ship. Consider who will fit BEST within the company and not always who has the deepest pedigree.
This advice is even more important in this competitive industry since mid-level talent is getting top-level salary offers from companies hoping to assemble the "dream-team". Your brand and company should be the focus on your hiring decisions. While short-term it might make sense to bring the "gunslinger" type - ie. an expert in the field who's going to take charge and instantly make changes, the reality is that this can create a lot of "stop/starts" in company momentum as a lot of times this type of talent is always on the search for the next company to hire them on.
Best for the brand
There's a lot of theories in hiring, and at the end of the day the reality is that it's a thing to be celebrated. Our brand is growing, our business is growing, we're forecasting for additional growth, and have amazing partners who we've worked with for years. All these factors lead to a growth in our team as well - which is a celebratory moment. Bring in the type of people who celebrate this as well. The job hunters looking for opportunity, looking for a similar environment that you offer, and most importantly the type of people you want around you even if the ship starts sinking.
