Dimming LED lighting: how does it work?

LED lamps consist of small light sources, which are called LEDs. The movement of electrons through a semiconductor material illuminates these small light sources. Only a small amount of heat is produced here, in contrast to fluorescent and incandescent lamps. In this way very little energy is lost to heat and the lamp can last a lot longer. The more current is sent to the LED, the brighter the light becomes. Of course, this also works the other way around, the less current that goes to the LED, the less bright. To be able to dim an LED lamp, extra control of the power supply is therefore required. In principle, every LED lamp has these electronics.
