LeBron James put an end to speculation over his future by making it official at the ESPYs on Wednesday night - effectively ending speculation as to his intentions regarding his next season with Los Angeles Lakers. The superstar announced this decision during his address at this year's show.
Breaking news refers to events of significance that warrant immediate coverage in broadcast media, such as live events such as shootings and fires.
The King’s Final Decision
LeBron James made headlines following the Los Angeles Lakers' loss to Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference finals, but he appears poised for another season with their beloved franchise. James made this announcement while accepting Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's award as league all-time leading scorer - prompting an eruption from crowd members at Dolby Theatre upon hearing James' words.
Even while playing through a torn tendon in his right foot during the playoffs, James still managed to lead his Lakers team on an unexpected run and reach the conference finals. James averaged 24.5 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game this past season for Los Angeles; making him an NBA icon and four-time MVP who remains one of today's premier basketball players.
The Lakers' offseason will be dynamic as they look to replace Kentavious Caldwell-Pope with someone capable of providing some stability behind reigning four-time All-Star LeBron James. While Gabe Vincent and Taurean Prince may provide added depth, reaching full potential will likely require healthy James.
Dave McMenamin of ESPN reported that sources close to LeBron believe he will return for season no. 21 with the Lakers. As four-time NBA champ he holds an opt-in player option for 2024-25 season; it is widely expected that he will exercise this option.
The Lakers' front office will likely want to sign James back next season, given his track record of leading teams to playoff appearances and championship wins. But they will need to make tough decisions in order to re-sign him; it will be fascinating to witness how their front office copes with building around someone who has been plagued with injuries over recent seasons.
The King’s Final Reaction
LeBron James will stay in Los Angeles for another season. During his acceptance speech for an ESPY award Wednesday, LeBron made this announcement at Dolby Theater in Hollywood - seemingly ending all speculation as to his future after Lakers were defeated in Western Conference finals by Denver Nuggets 3-0 and hinting he might retire from NBA basketball. But quickly set those rumor aside with this announcement at Dolby.
James had an exceptional season despite playing through a foot injury that limited him to 55 regular-season games. He averaged 28.9 points, 8.3 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game for a Lakers team that made a strong playoff push after trading for multiple new rotation players at the trade deadline.
At this point in his career, James is locked in a rivalry with the Golden State Warriors that could see multiple playoff meetings over time. Rob Pelinka may have made these decisions this offseason with James' presence assumed and prioritization of incremental improvements over major trade moves in mind.
The Lakers enjoyed one of their strongest regular seasons since LeBron arrived in Los Angeles in 2021, going 43-39 and seeing strong contributions from Jordan Clarkson, Kyle Kuzma and Jaxson Hayes to push them towards playoff eligibility in the second half. Unfortunately they fell to Utah Jazz in their opening round series before being defeated by Nuggets in West finals series 3-0.
With James and Davis on board, the Lakers should contend for a championship in 2024-25 - although not quite yet. Their payroll could expand significantly if both players sign long-term deals; currently they owe approximately $70 million next season to Austin Reaves, D'Angelo Russell, Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, Jaxson Hayes and Cam Reddish alone.
Add both James and Davis would push that number beyond $100 million, pushing the Lakers close to reaching their max slot limit and creating a difficult decision for management, who will have to decide between spending big money on two stars or pursuing free agents such as Emmanuel Mudiay.

The King’s Final Statement
Los Angeles Lakers' season came to a disappointing close on Tuesday when they lost to Chicago Bulls by 107-103, yet LeBron James is set to play next season after missing eight games with a torn tendon in his right foot. According to reports, James revealed he has begun feeling like himself again due to team support while recovering from this injury.
After Los Angeles was defeated in the Western Conference finals by Denver Nuggets, 38-year-old superstar LeBron James considered retirement but confirmed at the 2023 ESPYs that he will play another NBA season. At that ceremony he received the Best Record-Breaking Performance award for surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as NBA all-time leading scorer.
During his acceptance speech, the four-time champion expressed gratitude to all the fans who had supported him throughout his career and said he remains inspired to strive towards greatness. Furthermore, he noted that he intends to keep playing until his body no longer permits it.
Rich Paul, LeBron James' agent, told SiriusXM that he believes his four-time MVP can play five or six more years. Paul made comparisons between James and NFL legend Tom Brady as both share similar longevity and success within their sports.
No one knows for certain if James will undergo surgery this summer for his torn tendon in his foot, although he did not rule it out during his remarks at the ESPYs. James currently has a two-year deal that expires after 2024's season and it seems likely that he will exercise his player option for that second year - joining Robert Parish, Kevin Garnett Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin Willis who have all played 21+ seasons each. Furthermore, it could be possible that Los Angeles signs Anthony Davis as this offseason could further boost their chances at landing another championship title win!
The King’s Final Words
While some analysts believed LeBron James might consider retirement after being ousted from the Lakers by Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference finals, anyone familiar with NBA knew otherwise. James has always prided himself on longevity and probably wouldn't give up without one more attempt at winning an elusive championship title.
This year was far from easy for him, even though his foot injury did not limit him as severely as expected. Long flights, physical play and emotional strain from facing old foes in both series took their toll; and although he gave his all during Game 7 against Denver but that wasn't enough to cause an upset win for them.
He averaged 28.9 points, 8.3 rebounds and 6.9 assists per game for the season while shooting 50.4 percent from the field and breaking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's NBA career scoring record in February while also taking home his third ESPY Award as Best Player.
But all their hard work wasn't enough for the Lakers to win their first championship since 2012. Still, it was an exceptional season overall and their young stars like Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and Ivica Zubac have started to step into their roles on a significant basis.
If the Lakers can keep D'Angelo Russell and JaVale McGee under contract for next season, they should be in good shape. Although veteran signings might be needed, general manager Rob Pelinka tends to prioritize continuity over dramatic trade moves.
But if the Lakers cannot re-sign their key targets, they might need to trade James at some point. That risk they are willing to take as long as it ensures he will still play for at least another season (his money is secured through 2023-24, though 2024-25 player options exist that they could exercise; though that could change should they fail to win another championship by then).
