On leaving and letting go

In my 26 year long career, I moved from project to project, from one customer to another, from one industry to another industry, and from a company to another company several times. I have written about moving from technology to another in my last year's post.

There are soft aspects of leaving a position, place, or technology for taking up a new, not well-known or well-understood position, a place, or a technology-based assignment. It pushes the individual out of the established "comfort zone" but at the same time, it renews interest and enthusiasm in the work. New opportunities to learn, interact with new people, and solve problems from different domains give the much-needed push to the career.

Each time the movement happens, I left an empowered team behind, coached the team that I am leaving to create better solutions and products in my absence. Developing people to replace me in a role gives me the freedom to take up a higher-level challenge by not getting stuck in a position for too long.

It is also interesting to join a new team where there are several old biases and opinions between team members. As a new member, one can be free of all those past biases and create a new and fresh working culture by bringing in fresh views and asking naive questions to some of the well-established protocols.

Finally, there are spiritual benefits of moving around. There is no attachment or possessiveness towards the role being performed. As the role was performed earlier by several others and we know it will continue to be performed by several others in the future and I am only one in the sequence of people who have done it, and probably done it with leaving some positive legacy!

So, join, learn, achieve, coach, let it go and leave a legacy! and repeat.... and keep those memories and learning!!
