LEAVING A LEGACY

In the words of the notable author?Chuck Palahniuk, “We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever, but to leave behind something that will.”

At a recent leadership conference, I was asked to lead two sessions on “Leaving a Legacy.” Local?luminaries gathered for two days to discuss the significant issues, challenges and opportunities we face as a dynamic, growing city.?It is one of my favorite events?because I get to reunite with Austin’s most influential people and think about the major issues we can impact through our collective knowledge and action.?

The “Leaving a Legacy” sessions were eye-opening and quite meaningful; each of us shared what it meant and how we are living our lives NOW to leave that mark on the world that hopefully will have positive results for years and years to come.

One of my favorite examples of a Texas legend, is Lady Bird Johnson, who focused many of her efforts on beautifying the great state of Texas with miles of our beloved Bluebonnet flowers, and other stunning wildflowers. It is not by chance that when you travel across Texas each spring, you will be blessed by her initiatives to cover the countryside with an array of brilliant colors. Lady Bird left a legacy of hope and lovely moments that will endure for generations to come.

What will your legacy be? For some, it is giving large grants or sums of money to causes we support and admire. For others, it is teaching future generations or living a life that inspires and motivates those around us. Several people in our session described the goodness they learned from their parents that they hope to carry on. And, as the old saying goes, “to live in the hearts of those we leave behind is to never die.”
