Leaveism - what is it all about?

Leaveism is the practice of using your annual leave, rest days, and other similar schemes when you're too unwell to work or need time to catch up on work that has not yet been completed. It was first coined in 2013 by Dr Ian Hesketh from the University of Manchester in the UK.
Employees who practice leaveism may be suffering from mental health issues, burnout, or stress or simply a heavy workload. They might feel guilty about taking sick leave or believe that they'll fall behind on their work. In some cases, employees might even feel like their job security is at risk if they take time off.
Employers need to create a positive culture around sick leave and annual leave entitlements. Managers should encourage their team members to take breaks when needed and ensure that employees aren't overworked or overwhelmed.
An employer could be to provide flexible working hours or remote work options so that employees can balance their personal and professional lives better. Offering mental health support services such as counselling can also help employees who may be struggling with stress or burnout.
