The main reason for this is consumer ignorance and the premium image associated with leather. Synthetic leather or "fake leather" is of lower quality and deteriorates quickly, but due to marketing tactics and the "leather" label, consumers end up paying more for inferior products.

  1. Durability: Genuine leather products can last for decades. Whether it’s shoes, belts, jackets, or bags, leather becomes softer and more beautiful over time.

  1. Marketing Influence: Brands often portray leather as a "luxury item," leading consumers to believe it is expensive.
  2. Prevalence of Synthetic Leather: Low-quality products are sold under the leather label, creating confusion among consumers about distinguishing between genuine and synthetic leather.
  3. Initial Purchase Cost: The upfront cost of leather products may be higher, but in the long run, they prove to be cheaper as they don’t require frequent replacements.

So it all comes down to marketing right? The leather industry is devoid of marketing as Mike Redwood worte in his article . We never took the narrative in our hands. The industry is still waiting for the fashion brands, the customers to share knowledge about leather. It wont happen and it will continue to harm us . Time for the industry to start marketing their perspective to the consumer themselves.
