Learnings from the Spotify model

Learnings from the Spotify model

I have observed and experienced several organisations trying Agile at Scale using Frameworks like SAFe, Less, SOS, DAD and Nexus. Has anyone in my network tried aligning with the Spotify model?

If this is your first time reading about the Spotify model, I have a brief below.

Spotify Model is not a prescribed methodology or framework like Agile or Scrum, it is an organisational approach that Spotify used to scale Agile and manage its growth. The Spotify Model is known for its emphasis on autonomy, cross-functional squads, and a culture of continuous improvement. The key components include Squads, Tribes, Chapters, and Guilds. ?Read more

The Spotify Model has received both praise and criticism.

On a positive note, it's not a framework, meaning it gives the flexibility to individual squads to choose the framework; in another way, you will see different teams under the same tribe aligning to various frameworks.

On the other side of the coin, as the number of tribes and squads grows, so should the strength of the chapters, which comes at an increased administrative overhead. Given the higher flexibility, dependency management is a challenge across tribes.

Despite many multinationals trying to adapt and embrace this, it's still debated whether Spotify practised this or this was just limited to the whitepaper published in 2012. link to whitepaper

At Garansys, we are working to increase professionalism within our IT organization. We want to do this with aspects of the Spotify model. Are you guys already implementing the Spotify Model? If so, what "lessons learned" can you share with us?

It has some elements you find in SAFe, but in more flexible approach. The success will depend on other factors such as existing org structure, culture and senior management support.
