Learnings from China for Hispanics

Learnings from China for Hispanics

I was in China a few days ago where I had two workshops on personal branding and came back home totally impressed. There’s no doubt -- and it's nothing new to many -- that every culture has a huge deal of learnings and understandings to share, honestly I am devoted to discovering the best practices of other communities to put in practice for ours.

Spending time with my students and with local people allowed me to connect and dive into their way of living -- All this got me thinking: how have their communities unified themselves? I’m not talking exclusively about chinese people, but also african-americans, jews, irish… There are a lot of examples of communities that have been through the same process as we hispanics are right now. So, what can we learn from them? And how do we put it in practice?

In the context of China, it is really impressive seeing people’s determination and hardwork. Half of what Shanghai is right now didn’t exist 20 years ago… building their city up together tells us a lot about their work and life values. I’m not only referring to buildings or infrastructure, but also there is a very interesting mindset towards growing, getting better, having purpose. I saw this in my workshop -- my students were very connected with themselves, they worked towards finding balance and achieving economic prosperity as well.

This really moved my bones. It really is possible to work hard, keep advancing, create opportunities for our communities and get recognition as long as we are conscious of ourselves, and as long as we keep acting together as one -- One cannot achieve anything without the other, it's only by working together that we can succeed. And yes, I am talking to us Hispanics.

We, as latinas have to get better in financial issues not only for ourselves but to change lives, we have to know more of financial empowerment. I saw in Chinese women a great amount of self awareness, self belief and self esteem which has lead them to be prosperous in business.  This is something we should definitely put more in practice, let’s start building virtuous circles instead of vicious ones!

True that. If you don’t value yourself who will. As Latino’s the need is not to compete on price but on added value, knowledge.

We must first believe that we are just as valuable, smart and capable as the most important and prominent people in the workplace and society. We must be willing to follow and learn from those that are wiser and remove ourselves from those that pull us down. We must be humble enough to recognize our weaknesses and be willing to change and grow. We must constantly learn, be willing to fail and take risks and not give up. We must share our knowledge and extend our hand to those behind so that we could help them up. We must fight for what we believe and think BIG. Si se puede!

Great article and good question. In my current role I have learned that we have to stick to the fact that we bring value to the table. Our work, events, seminars, workshops, articles, publications and more have a tremendous value. There is a misconception even in our own culture that we need to charge less o más barato because we are Latinos depreciating our effort, knowledge and experience.
