Most of us have goals, right? My goal for this year is to learn how to swim. Don’t laugh! It has been a desire of mine for years to brave the water. I’m on lesson #5, and I must say it’s going okay. But, can I be honest?
I would love to wave my hand and be able to swim right now. However, if I instantly became Simone Manuel or Katie Ledecky, I would not be as fulfilled as I am with completing the process. Why? Because our goals are more than just things we want to have or achieve, but a description of who we are and what we value.
There’s more than meets the eye when it comes to your goals. Consider this idea:
If you could have everything you want just magically appear, would you find that TRULY satisfying?
Imagine you could just suddenly snap your fingers and be wealthy, play the piano, see Paris, lose 30 pounds, or have a successful business. Although these goals are appealing, the journey is more rewarding.
For example, I’m sure you would want more than just a successful business, but a business with longevity and growth. Or, if you lose 30 pounds, you would want to make certain that you keep it off. That, my friend, is the journey. Here's the truth:
Things don’t mean as much if you don’t work for them!
Remember the old saying, “You get what you pay for.” If you pay nothing, how much value do you place in it? But, if you sow in sweat, time, commitment, and other personal values; you are more likely to hold that outcome sacred.
Most people subscribe to one of two theories. We are either:
- Charged by overcoming a challenge, or
- Find personal growth satisfying.
One of the principles that I share with my clients is that struggle leads to learning.
Think about all the things you’ve achieved. Now, imagine all of those things had just been handed to you. How does that make you feel? Would you still be the same person if you’d lost 50 pounds by waving a magic wand, versus changing your diet and working hard at the gym?
Our goals are a way to struggle and grow. Goals provide a sense of accomplishment when they require work and effort to achieve.
Self-confidence and self-esteem grow as well when goals are set and accomplished.
