A Learning Year

A Learning Year

As the sun sets on 2024, I’d like to share some reflections on a milestone year. My year has been defined by learning - a theme that has enriched every facet of my life. My hope is to encourage anyone considering a learning journey in 2025 to dive in and embrace the adventure.

The Learning Imperative

As a full-time, seasoned executive, I can wholeheartedly recommend reconnecting with academic rigor. While the demands were significant, the rewards were beyond measure. This July, I graduated in London with an Executive Master in Cultural Leadership from The Royal Academy of Art and Maastricht University. In September, I earned my Executive MBA from Maastricht University. Admittedly, I wasn’t the youngest in either class, but that only enhanced the experience. The diversity of thought, cross-generational connections, and deep dives into topics I’m deeply passionate about made it exhilarating. I found learning later in life transformative.

Family and Friends: My Cornerstones

My academic journey demanded sacrifices, particularly from my family. Weekends in the library and vacations devoted to classes and research meant less time together. I wasn’t always sure of the destination, but I knew I was absolutely on the right path—and that my family and friends believed in me. Lucky me.

Consumer Goods Forum: The Ultimate Knowledge Network

In my role at The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF), I had the privilege of welcoming key retailers and manufacturers worldwide and other stakeholders into our organisation, its events and our Coalitions of Action. Being part of this dynamic network is a masterclass in responsible growth, and I’m continuously learning and inspired by the leadership and innovation of our members and my colleagues.

A New Chapter with IMMA

This November, I was honoured to join the Board of Directors at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). I am conscious of the trust that has been put in me and it is a privilege to contribute to Ireland’s leading modern art institution, supporting its mission to build a collection for the people of Ireland. I’m looking forward to furthering my knowledge in the arts sector, collaborating with my fellow Board members, and embracing new perspectives on governance and strategy.

Multigenerational learning: A Family Affair

I was a hugely proud Mum at our son’s graduation this October from Trinity College Dublin where he received a Master’s in Marketing. Albeit for different degrees, it was also fun to be students with assignment deadlines at the same time. (At least I thought so!) Later in the year my husband and I took a learning vacation to do Italian language classes. As a gifted linguist he was in a far more advanced class, but importantly we shared the learning journey.

Research Heroes

As part of my MBA Business Consulting Project, I explored museum funding and philanthropy through interviews with leaders from six museums across four continents. This research was enriched by interviewing donors on their motivations, and considered how sustainability, ethics, and ESG practices played into their engagement. I’m deeply grateful to the thought leaders who shared their time and expertise, making this project both impactful and joyful. My sincere thanks also go to the exceptional professors and speakers at Maastricht University and The Royal Academy of Art for reengaging me in the process of academic thinking, especially Prof Rachel Pownall (RAJ), Prof Rob Bauer, Marie Tavinor and Tim Smith-Laing

Expanding My Network

My academic pursuits have expanded my global network far beyond the retail and consumer goods sector, infusing it with fresh perspectives and cultural leadership. The diversity in sectors and thinking continue to inspire me daily and refine my approach to problem solving, leadership and management in general.

The Power of Collaboration

I am a fervent believer that collaboration is key to building a sustainable future across multiple ?industries. I’m also passionate about art’s role in exploring the human experience, its power as a catalyst for change, and its intersection with business to create better lives, better business and a better world.

Caregiving Perspectives

This year a significant number of people who have my unconditional love have been seriously ill. Their resilience has been humbling. I learned that “being there” means more than presence - it’s about helping others dream, plan, and look forward. Positivity has power. I’ve witnessed profound kindness to those who have been ill. Your heart bursts. Despite our complex world, I learned that human goodness is a superpower alive in all of us. I saw it in action. It takes your breath away.

Mermaid Moments

Swimming, a lifelong passion, has been a particularly good friend this year, always adapting to my state of mind. It gives me energy, develops my stamina, helps me manage stress, or simply relax. It creates a meditative state where I solve work problems and find solutions to all sorts of things by the end of my laps. My next goal? Qualify for an Olympic synchronized swimming team—flowery cap and all! (Just kidding).

My wish for You in 2025

If you’re considering going back to school in 2025 to develop new skills or pursue a long-held passion, don’t hesitate. Dive in. You might not know today exactly where it may take you, but you can rest assured you are on the right and rewarding path. Your path. Have a blast and a Happy New Year!
