A brand-new year, looming economic slowdown, and redefined notion of work – what are the learning trends that will influence this evolving landscape 2023? It doesn’t matter where you work from and what you work on, being a lifelong learner is critical to succeed in today’s world.
After I published the Mega trends 2030 and Trends 2023, I received a lot of requests to publish the learning trends for 2023, so here we are.
- ?Leadership and business skills become critical again: In the last few years, as many organizations embarked on their digital transformation journey, the focus shifted towards building tech skills. Last 2 years have shown us that the leadership and business skills are critical to drive any tech or non tech initiative. So, in 2023, we will see skills like communication, negotiation, critical thinking, empathetic leadership take centerstage again and organizations investing in the programs that help build these mission critical skills.
- ?Balance between just in time and continuous learning is the key: With continuously evolving corporate landscape, competencies will remain evergreen while skills needed to perform a current job role will change frequently. So, organizations need to provide opportunities to their employees to balance just in time learning with continuous learning. Depending on where an employee is in their development journey and role in the organization, the time they need to spend in acquiring skills vs building competencies might vary.
- It will be all about experience: We all have competing priorities and learning often is pushed down in that priority list. So, learning experiences will be a top trend in 2023 and technology will play a big role in it. Organizations must think beyond canned learning programs for their employees and focus on designing experiences that get the learners excited about learning, keep them engaged during learning, and have them coming back to learn more. Companies like Accenture are already experimenting with such experiences through Web 3.0 technologies like Metaverse for onboarding.
- Knowledge is no longer enough: Looking at the trends and Megatrends, it is clear that individual empowerment will be on rise, which basically means that domain knowledge is not enough, you should have hands-on experience as well. While strategy is important, operations are critical too. With the rise in the gig economy, owning your growth becomes important - the “doing” becomes important. Skills benchmarking, coaching solutions, and activity-based learning helps bridge this gap between knowledge and applicability.
- ?Linear learning will no longer work: In last couple of years, we have seen a rising awareness around the purpose and values. Almost all of us have reflected on how we can make an impact and make this world a better place. And that has invoked a new level of curiosity amongst us. So, we now want to build knowledge and experience in skills beyond our current job roles. We don’t want to be horses with blinders on when it comes to learning. Organizations must understand this shift in the learning behavior of their employees and give them an opportunity to develop skills and competencies beyond what is required in the workplace. By doing so, organizations benefit not just from employee engagement but also because then the employees can bring the diversity of skills and experience from other fields into their current role to drive innovation and productivity.
There is so much to explore in this space and it is proven by the investments that are being made in the EdTech space. The learning trends for 2023 are not trends that exist in a silo. They are evolving with the evolution of mankind and mega trends. I have barely scratched the surface in this newsletter. I would love to hear from you how do you see the learning landscape evolving.
Wishing you a healthy, happy, and abundant 2023!
