LEARNING STYLES DEBATERS ARE ASKING THE WRONG QUESTION

LEARNING STYLES DEBATERS ARE ASKING THE WRONG QUESTION

In a thought-provoking post, Kirstin Austin, the Chief Learning Officer at the IRS, provides an example for why we should reframe the debate around learning styles. Through her own experience—finding enhanced engagement in learning while listening to content on her walks—Kirstin illuminates a pivotal insight: It's not about the inability to learn through different modalities, but the varying degrees of engagement each modality offers.

This revelation underscores the essence of personalized engagement, a cornerstone of the transformative Learner Friendly Design (LFD) standard. LFD transcends traditional e-learning paradigms by embracing the uniqueness of every learner's engagement profile. It acknowledges that while some students may engage for longer periods of time through listening, others might find reading or watching videos more effective. Furthermore, a significant segment of learners achieves the greatest engagement when they have the opportunity to discuss the topic. By advocating for the availability of content in diverse formats, LFD ensures that learning resonates on an individual level, significantly amplifying learning effectiveness.

I’ve been saying and incorporating different modalities in my teaching for years! If absorbing and internalizing information is easier in a modality other than a traditional lecture format, then learn it that way and then translate your learning to mimic those of the method(s) of assessment!
