Learning Something New with Derek Dotson
Meet Derek Dotson, intrepid co-manager of our customer wellness team. He’s been with Kin since March 2018, and we have him to thank for helping to ensure our clients’ coverage needs are continuously met as their lives and situations change.
Fun fact: did you know that major updates to your home may signal it’s time to chat with your insurance agent? That’s just one of the things Derek helps educate our customers on during the life of their policy.
Let’s see what else we can learn from Derek.
How has your role at Kin changed over time?
When I started at Kin, I was responsible for leading a team of insurance consultants to help grow our business. As Kin has grown in terms of the products and services that we can offer to our insureds, my role has changed. I am now very focused on how we communicate with our insureds as well as how we use their data to customize the products we offer them.
What’s the most exciting project you’ve worked on?
I am developing the sales and marketing plan for all cross-sold products for the operations team – it’s the most exciting project I’ve worked on yet.
What are some of the ways that the company celebrates success?
We encourage team members to describe their initiatives and how they will increase satisfaction for our insureds and teammates alike during all-hands meetings. It’s a way to celebrate success as well as progress.
What do you enjoy most about working at Kin?
I enjoy being encouraged to leverage my unique creativity and experiences to help solve challenges that our business faces.
If you could try a new job for one day, what would it be?
I would like to be on the insurance product team for a day. Developing the products that we will offer as we expand into new markets is fascinating.
What advice would you give someone who’s interested in joining Kin?
I would offer the same advice our co-founder and CTO Lucas Ward gives to our team: run through walls, break things, and be chill while doing it.
What inspires you to succeed every day?
Knowing that the work my teammates and I do every day reduces the amount of frustration that homeowners experience inspires me. It’s nice to make a tangible difference in our customers’ lives.
What’s your favorite thing about Kin’s culture?
I love the diversity of prior work experience, skill sets, and personal interests that our team has. It’s a great opportunity to learn something new from everyone.
