Learning Slavic languages is easier than you think

Learning Slavic languages is easier than you think

Do you know all those flags in the picture?

All those are Slavic languages.

Slavic languages include:

  • Russian
  • Ukrainian
  • Belarusian
  • Polish
  • Czech
  • Slovak
  • Croatian
  • Serbian
  • Bosnian
  • Slovene
  • Bulgarian
  • And others

Did you notice how similar they are?

Once you learn one..

The others are very easy

The 3 big European language families:

Slavic in blue.

Romance in green.

Germanic in orange.

Slavic languages are divided in 3 big groups:

West Slavic Languages:

  • Polish
  • Czech
  • Slovak

South Slavic Languages:

  • Serbian
  • Croatian
  • Bosnian,
  • Slovenian

East Slavic Languages:

  • Russian
  • Ukrainian
  • Belarusian

Ok that’s interesting but..

How do you learn them?

If you read the previous edition about learning Romance languages..

You probably remember what lexical similarity is.

Basically:

Most words are similar.

In languages from the same family.

Same applies to Slavic languages.

So we’ll do something similar here:

You start with one new language every month. Memorise 100-200 words a day.

You can use this fast memorisation technique:

https://twitter.com/NLLMikel/status/1668225838205075458?s=20

Read daily to improve grammar and vocab.

Listen daily to improve comprehension.

Read aloud daily to improve your speaking.

In a month your comprehension will be good enough.

You’ll know between 2000 and 5000 words.

Time to repeat the process with the next language.

Do exactly the same thing with another language.

Each month.

But don't forget to..

Continue to read aloud and listen to the first language.

Use interesting content.

Like online articles, books and podcasts.

50% of your learning time with the new language.

The other 50% reviewing the previous ones.

Keep adding a language every month.

This will be a lot of work at first.

But it will get much easier with time.

Once you build the habits and gain experience.

As long as you stay consistent you’ll see amazing results.

And it will only get easier with time.

Don’t worry about mixing them up.

Listen to all of them regularly.

Read aloud in all of them regularly.

And if someday you are going to visit one of those countries..

Just focus on that specific language for a few weeks beforehand.

That’s all you have to do to succeed.

Remember that you need:

  • Consistency.
  • Focus.

If you want results you have to learn seriously.
