We asked 4 experienced Operators what first-time Operators need to know about their essential role in the industry.
Process Operators are responsible for operating, controlling, adjusting, and regulating temperatures, pressures, levels, flow rates, and other operating variables to ensure the production of quality and on-spec products. Their job requires maintaining current, detailed knowledge and understanding of process unit equipment, unit operations, principles or operating methods used in the process, and the effects of these operations on the equipment involved. Additionally, Operators must make periodic rounds of units, checking or adjusting process equipment to guarantee proper operation, and draw product samples for laboratory analysis to make necessary changes in operating conditions as needed. As a new generation of employees enters the workforce, we asked four seasoned Operators to share their top advice for newcomers.
Alan Young, Ethylene Unit, 9 years:
Follow the lead of your senior Operators and Operations Team Leaders. Be proactive and take the initiative. Never stop learning, even after you've completed your qualifications. Remember that there is always more to learn in this field, and becoming an Operator is about more than just the paycheck. It's a rewarding and fulfilling career choice.

Darin Gau, Ethanolamines Unit, 26 years:
The most significant challenge you may face is adjusting to shift work, both mentally and physically. Don't worry; you'll adapt within a month. Maintain a healthy lifestyle by continuing to exercise. It's crucial for all Operators to take ownership of their unit and treat it as their own house. Whenever a fellow Operator goes outside, join them and learn something new, even if it's not directly related to your current job qualifications.
Lawrence Jones, Utilities, 12 years:
Asking questions can be intimidating at first, but don't let that hold you back. Always ask questions and seek clarification when needed. Books and manuals are helpful, but nothing beats hands-on experience. Partner with a senior Operator to gain insights into how equipment works, hear about their experiences, and learn troubleshooting strategies. Familiarize yourself with your equipment and always be ready to lend a hand when asked.
Dillon Harrison, Ethanolamines Unit, 9 years:
Make an effort to learn your equipment, flows, and procedures thoroughly. Utilize shutdowns as opportunities to gain a better understanding of your equipment. Embrace any special assignment opportunities, whether it's setting up Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) bins or writing permits for outages. Remember, there are no stupid questions, so never hesitate to ask for help or clarification.
It's essential for first-time Operators to be open to learning, ask questions, and build strong relationships with their experienced colleagues. Taking advantage of opportunities for growth, maintaining a proactive mindset, and embracing the challenges of the job will ensure a successful and rewarding career in the industry.

1 年Mouth shut, ears open. Find the most knowledgeable person and get in their pocket. Be the first one out and the last one in. While your degree gave you the basics, now you are in the real world. You won't learn anything with your butt planted in a chair, get out and trace lines until you know it by heart, and then trace them again. Make yourself an asset, versus a liability. It is a great career and served my family well for 35 years.
