Learning and Relaxing Your Mind With Pleasure Reading

Learning and Relaxing Your Mind With Pleasure Reading

Greetings!!!

Did you know that one of the most important aspects of language acquisition is pleasure reading?? I know that you have read a lot of English school books, but how much pleasure reading are you doing???

Self-care is important to keep your mind and body running at an optimum level.? This includes exercise, eating right, sleeping, and relaxing your mind with pleasure reading.

Here is a list of some good reads.? If you have any to add, send me a message and I will put it on the list.

The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir by Thi Bui - I use this in my English Book Club course.? It is one of the most powerful books I’ve ever read.? My English Book Clubs have been composed of people from several cultures: Asian, Latino, Latin American, and European.? This book has bonded my students from these different cultures as they shared their own experiences with their families and the journey from one culture to the next.

“This beautifully illustrated and emotional story is an evocative memoir about the search for a better future and a longing for the past. Exploring the anguish of immigration and the lasting effects that displacement has on a child and her family, Bui documents the story of her family’s daring escape after the fall of South Vietnam in the 1970s, and the difficulties they faced building new lives for themselves.”

Short reads delivered to your email:

There is no theme, except that most excerpts will come from a non-fiction work, primarily historical in focus, and will occasionally be controversial.? https://delanceyplace.com/delanceyplace-subscribe.php

Money, Financial History, and Trading:

Market Wizards by Jack D. Schwager - A very old book of interviews of the people who built the systems and companies we work for now.? How do the world's most successful traders amass tens, hundreds of millions of dollars a year? Are they masters of occult knowledge, lucky winners in a random market lottery, natural-born virtuosi―Mozarts of the markets?

Inside Money: Brown Brothers Harriman and the American Way of Power Hardcover – May 18, 2021 - Because an understanding of the past leads to a more informed future, this is a very interesting book.? It describes the accent of one of Wall Street's powerful financial firms and the evolution of the modern U.S. financial system. It’s interesting because so much is changing and most of the firms that built the system no longer exist!

Communication, Curiosity, and Thought

Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know by Wharton professor Adam Grant - This book guides readers to understand that they have an ability to “rethink and unlearn,” Oduyoye says. “The premise is that so often we listen to opinions that make us feel good as opposed to ideas that make us think hard.”?

The book provides practical takeaways, too, such as “think like a scientist,” “define your identity in terms of your values, not opinions,” and ask, “what evidence would actually make me change my mind about something?”

Digital Body Language: How to Build Trust & Connection No Matter the Distance by Erica Dhawan, a global leadership expert.?

“She takes a look at this increasingly digital world and tries to figure out how do you build trust and connection,” Oduyoye says. Even in emails, it’s important to be intentional and to show personality, for instance. “As a manager, I like her section on how to engage both extroverts and introverts in video conferences—that’s a hard skill.”??

While the future will hold more in-person meetings, “not everyone has the capacity or time to get on a plane,” he says. “This is here to stay.”

Are there any books that you would like to add? Are there any subjects that you would like to read about in the future? Let me know in the comments below or in a direct message.

That's a great tip! I like reading comic books or kids' books at the beginning when I am learning a language. It's a fun way to start learning how to read! ...but, that's just me!
