Learning matters, and Unlearning even MORE!

As someone who started to love reading and speaking to people, I often find myself reflecting on how we learn. The world moves quickly, and the knowledge we accumulate—whether from books, mentors, or experiences—can sometimes weigh us down instead of lifting us up. It sounds strange, doesn’t it? But here’s the truth: To learn something new, sometimes we have to unlearn what we think we already know.

Why Unlearning Matters

We all have certain beliefs, habits, and ways of thinking that feel comfortable—like a pair of old shoes we never want to throw away. But what happens when those shoes no longer fit? In today’s fast-changing world, sticking to outdated knowledge or rigid ideas can keep us stuck. To make space for new insights, we need to let go of old ones. This is what unlearning is all about.

Unlearning is not about forgetting everything you know. It’s about challenging old assumptions and being open to new perspectives. It’s acknowledging that what worked yesterday might not work today—and that’s okay. The goal is growth, not comfort.

The Power of Relearning

Once we unlearn, we open ourselves up to relearning. This is where real growth happens. Relearning allows us to reshape our understanding, make new connections, and approach familiar problems with fresh eyes. It’s like reading a book for the second time—you’ll notice things you missed the first time around.

When I think about some of the most successful people I’ve met or read about, they all have one thing in common: they’re lifelong learners. They are constantly evolving because they embrace the idea that knowledge is fluid, not fixed. What they knew five years ago isn’t the same as what they know now, and that’s their strength. How to embrace learning and unlearning :

1) Stay Curious

2) Question your assumptions

3) Get comfortable with discomfort

4) Surround yourself with new people/ideas

The Future Belongs to the Adaptive

In a world that is changing faster than ever, the ability to adapt will define success. The most valuable skill today isn’t having all the answers—it’s being able to change those answers when needed.

We’ve all been taught that learning is the key to success. But here’s the thing: learning is only half the equation. The other half is knowing when to unlearn and relearn. Those who can do both will thrive in an environment where the only constant is change.

I once read a quote that stayed with me: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” This couldn’t be more true today.

So, as you continue your journey—whether in your career, personal life, or anywhere in between—ask yourself: What do I need to unlearn so I can make room for something better?

Learning is about growth, but unlearning and relearning? That’s transformation.

Let’s keep transforming. Together.
