The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.
This quote by Brian Herbert is a reminder of what learning truly is - a choice!
We humans have survived over the years and positioned ourselves on the top of the food chain because of choices made by our ancestors - to try, to test, to innovate! This ability to choose is a privilege and as a student starting your college journey, you must make the most of it.
Learning is not limited to classroom discussions and can be found everywhere - but only if you are looking!
Let us look at how to maintain continuous learning using a key concept of marketing - need, want, and demand :
The "need" to learn
You must have heard about how great leaders and successful people are the ones who keep learning, often mentioning it to be one of the key contributors to their journey.
This is because when you learn something new, you gain fresh insights, uncover new opportunities, and open the door to networking with others who share that interest.
Classroom knowledge alone isn't enough, as most students are receiving the same information. If you want to stand out, you need to find more ways to expand your knowledge.
The "want" to learn
Those who succeed are the ones who are the hungriest. Everybody wants to be successful, but ultimately, it comes down to who wants it the most. The same applies to learning.
For instance, I wanted to diversify my profile by pursuing online courses and earning certifications. With that goal in mind, I completed 3-4 courses each year alongside my college studies. This not only deepened my knowledge of the subject but also helped me keep up with the competition.
Find ways to keep learning by taking courses, working on projects, joining student clubs and societies, attending events and seminars, reading books and blogs, and more!
The "demand" to learn
Along with giving you the knowledge and confidence to face new challenges, learning helps you stay relevant.
You need to recognise what is needed at the moment and work on it - whether it is understanding a method or concept for an exam, or acquiring a skill that will give you an edge over the competition when applying for a role.
Meeting this demand will ensure you achieve the desired results. And remember, no learning goes to waste!
Understand what you need to learn, why it matters, and commit yourself to mastering it. The difference between the good and the great is often that little extra effort.
Make the most of the opportunities and resources available to you, and channel them towards making your college experience a successful one!
Keep learning and keep growing!
