May 27th, at 5:30 pm (MT), is the next learning lab provided by the CREWES Data Science Initiative. It will be the second lab of a series of four, focused on the solutions for seismic inversion using machine learning, a problem we faced during the Geophysics in the Cloud competition.

Our guest presenter Kai Zhuang will go through a hands-on demonstration on how his group created different seismic attributes from the near, mid, and far stacks to help in the inversion modelling. He will use the same data as the competition and all will be done in Python.

The Geophysics in the Cloud was a competition with the goal to perform seismic inversion of rock attributes from seismic data with the use of well logs. It used open data (3D Poseidon from Australia) and the competitors needed to perform inversions for P-Impedance, S-Impedance, and Density. Well logs with DTC, DTS and RHOB are used for training and evaluation (two blin wells). For the modelling part, the competition provides 4 different volumes: near, mid, and far stacks, as well as a smooth P-velocity model from semblance analysis. Only these four input features may not be enough to get a reasonable inversion of the three target attributes.

Kai Zhuang graduated with his B.Sc. in Geophysics from the University of Calgary in June 2018. After graduating, he returned to begin his graduate studies at the University of Calgary. Kai joined CREWES in September 2018 to pursue a Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Trad. While still new to CREWES he is excited in pursuing research that aligns with his interests in migration, inversion, multiples, and blending.
