As many of you, I have recently started my upskilling journey on Generative AI by undertaking some online courses, reading articles, following subject matter experts, attending conferences and by actually practicing some available free GenAI tools.
This last 2 weeks "milestones" were attending EnlightED
?(recorded sessions available here) focused on AI within Education and the?Mindstone
AI Community MeetUp organized by Joshua W?hle
?and Advantere
. Both highly recommendable.
Here there are some 'brushstroke' insights & upskilling suggestions from last week’s experience:
- Generative AI as a tool to support human creation and decision making, not to substitute it (or not in all cases).?
- GenAI seen not as a threat but as an opportunity to learn doing things in a different way and use it for our benefit. We have lifts and we still need stairs. We have computers and we still use paper and pen/pencil. We have cars and we continue walking or jogging.?
- Human to human intervention will continue to be crucial and value adding.
- AI brings a lot of benefits (i.e. time efficiency, automatization of repetitive tasks, an always available-though-non-infallible "peer") and some new challenges (i.e. ethics, regulation, upskilling workforce/students, AI hallucinations or bias).
-
Daniel Susskind
brought during EnlightED some interesting reflections. For example, the possibility that less work due to skills-mismatch, could leave people with lower sense of purpose and meaning. What impact would this lack of purpose have in society and mental health?
- How to proactively reimagine our jobs or how we teach/learn, with AI and higher automatization in mind, by starting to think of specific repetitive tasks were AI tools could save us time so that we can focus on more strategic and meaningful objectives.
- Paradigm shift where we need to be more conscious and honest about "what we know" (acquire knowledge: languages, expertise) and "what we don’t know". AI as a tool can support and help in a particular moment but we will continue needing subject matter experts and acquire knowledge in a particular area. Why? To evaluate whether the tool answer is correct or ethical; to have plan B if the tool is not available (like a sailor in the middle of the heavy sea storm not able to use his computer and going back to basics with the compass and stars to save his life).
- To finalize for today, I share this interesting toolkit on AI for educators https://lnkd.in/eNnyUHY8
?and I recommend you to play with Gamma - https://gamma.app/
?AI-powered presentation app that generates a?slide deck or illustrated document with images?and layouts from text prompts. Or explore image generation with Midjourney, although I personally prefer DALL.E 3.
Let the journey continue…??
