The Learning Game Has Changed

Knowledge can be acquired in a myriad of ways. No longer are you dependent upon a library, trade school, or college.

Technology has transformed the learning process. We can learn anywhere from anyone.

My thirst for knowledge started in a second-grade reading contest. We earned a sticker for every book we read. The top readers won lunch with Mrs. White at Carl’s Jr.

That contest changed my life.

What started as a desire to go to lunch with a teacher I adored, opened my eyes to the magic of reading.

Not only did I win the contest, by the end of second grade I read over a thousand books.

I WAS HOOKED.

It’s no surprise I pursued higher education. Sophomore year of college I changed my major from Business to Liberal Studies, graduated, and became a teacher. Embarking on my own journey to instill a love of learning in students.

Soaking up knowledge, seeking out and learning from the best comes naturally to me. As a new teacher, I knew I had a lot to learn before I was an expert, and spent many lunch periods observing our reading specialist. I wanted to be the best teacher I could be, took copious notes and picked her brain endlessly. (Thank you Maxine Palmer!)

My learning journey continued, taking online and in-person courses, completing my master's degree in curriculum design and becoming certified in Cognitive Coaching.

(Did I mention I love learning?)

When I graduated from college in 1994, there weren’t many online opportunities for continuing education. My options were reading educational magazines, books, attending workshops and taking more college courses.

It’s 2020 and the game has changed.

You can learn anything from anyone.

The problem isn’t where to find a course, it’s, “What course is best for me?”

My favorite online courses include cohorts where you interact with and learn from others.

Seth Godin has mastered this format.

The people his community draws are generous, wise and collaborative.

Spring of 2019 I nervously signed up for The Podcasting Fellowship. I knew it’d be value packed, but was hesitant I could actually pull off launching a podcast. Technology is not my forte and I had no idea how podcasting worked.

Not only did I go from idea to launching Keys to Courage on iTunes in eight short weeks, Seth himself listened to my intro and gave me direct feedback. It was an unexpected thrill and one that I’ll be eternally grateful for.

The team Seth and Alex gather are there to help, they want you to succeed. That’s what makes his Akimbo workshops so special. The camaraderie and generosity is second to none. It’s a safe place to show up, to try, to fail, to pivot and most importantly to learn.

The next round of The Podcasting Fellowship is launching NOW.

This round, I’ll be there not as a student, but as a student coach. I’d be thrilled and honored to see you go from idea to iTunes like I did.

Your voice is needed, your story is needed, your unique take on a podcast is needed.

If you haven’t taken an online course before, you are in for a treat. Learn from the best, surrounded by the best, and push yourself to tackle something out of your comfort zone.

This is your sign.

The world needs your voice.

Go.

Thanks for this, Amy. I loved learning until I started grade school. The system was not for me. I fell in love with learning music outside the walls of the school and art in college. After college, I fell in love with all kinds of learning again. Recently, I decided to immerse myself in learning about the creation and marketing of online courses. It’s amazing what can be done now to teach and learning online. I’m convinced business success will become more and more relevant to how much an organization embraces learning. Thanks again for the great article and good luck teaching your class!

This article makes me want to start my own podcast Amy Perkins! Well, one step at a time here for me however, you do have a way of words to motivate someone to seek out the experts in the field, and the podcast fellowship looks legit.??Lisa Lewis Arango, Ph.D., LMHC
