Learning From My Costly Mistake
When I was in college, I thought my Nissan pickup truck was so cool. It was slightly lowered, had chrome rims, and a racing steering wheel.
I had added a Tennessee Titans bobblehead doll to the dashboard and a pair of fuzzy black dice around the rearview mirror for good measure.
Yep, everything had been taken care of to make sure this ride was top-notch.
Everything, that is, but the engine.
I found that out the hard way while on my hour-and-a-half drive home from college.
As I turned down this old country highway in the middle of nowhere, the temperature gauge suddenly went full-tilt to red. I heard this terrible thumping noise coming from the front of the truck.
Then there was smoke coming from the hood—a lot of it.
I pulled over to the side of the road and was stuck. My beautiful red truck was in trouble.
This was a time before cell phones were readily available, and there wasn’t a house in sight.
Luckily, someone pulled over behind me to see if they could help.
This was lucky since I was a punk college kid with a shaved head (I started the trend when I started going bald at 20 years old) and my favorite cut-off Jim Beam t-shirt.
The fellow gave me a ride to the closest gas station and even gave me a quarter so I could use the payphone to call my dad.
Daddy (yes, I still say “daddy”) - Did you check the oil?
Me - Huh?
Daddy - The oil. Does it have any?

Me - Well, I don’t know.
Daddy - Oh, good lord. Do you mean to tell me you have that fancy stuff all over the truck, but you don’t even know if it has oil?
Me?- .....
I took care of everything but the thing that mattered the most.
