September 18th marks Equal Pay Day, a day dedicated to highlighting the persistent gender pay gap and advocating for solutions to bridge this divide. Achieving equal pay for equal work is not only a matter of justice but also economic thrive and social progress. One effective strategy in the pursuit of gender pay equity is to learn from the best practices implemented in different countries around the world.
1. ???? Maternity Leave Salary Increase
In France, one exemplary practice centers around increasing the salaries of women returning from maternity leave. This practice recognises the financial impact that motherhood can have on a woman's career and income. By providing financial support during this crucial time, France encourages women to return to work without the fear of losing income or career progression. This approach not only promotes gender equality but also supports women in maintaining their economic independence, and in contributing to the progress of their sector.
2. ???? Transparency and Reporting Laws
Iceland's commitment to gender equality is known and the determination of this country in being the best example for all is evident in its robust transparency and reporting laws. Companies in Iceland are required to disclose their gender pay gap and implement corrective measures if disparities exist. Such transparency not only holds employers accountable but also empowers the worker to negotiate for equal pay. This practice showcases how legal frameworks are instrumental in bridging the pay gap.
3. ???? Flexible Work Arrangements
Sweden's emphasis on flexible work arrangements is a game-changer in the quest for equal pay. By promoting a work culture that accommodates the diverse needs of employees, including parents and caregivers, Sweden fosters an environment where women can excel in their careers while balancing other responsibilities. On 2 August 2022, Sweden implemented the EU Balance Directive. The rules mean that employees who care for children up to eight years of age, and employees who care for sick relatives, are entitled to request accommodations in terms of flexible working, which could be eg scheduling of working hours or working from home. This approach illustrates the importance of defining progressing Directives and legal frameworks to achieve a higher degree of pay equity.

4. ???? Zealand's Pay Equity Legislation
New Zealand's introduction of pay equity legislation is another commendable step toward equal pay. This legislation ensures that women in female-dominated industries receive equitable compensation for their work compared to industries dominated by men. By recognising the undervaluation of traditionally female roles, New Zealand shows how targeted legislation can address specific gender pay disparities.
5. ???? Gender-Balanced Boards
Canada's efforts to promote gender-balanced boards in both public and private sectors are praiseworthy. By mandating a minimum number of women on corporate boards, Canada encourages women's representation at decision-making levels. This practice acknowledges that diversity in leadership is essential to addressing gender gaps at all levels of an organisation.

The journey towards equal pay for equal work is a difficult one, but it becomes more attainable when we draw inspiration from successful strategies implemented worldwide. Most of the time, we don’t have to reinvent the wheel, but look around, study, learn, and implement - by adapting the solution to our specific situation.
France's support for women returning from maternity leave, Iceland's transparency laws, Sweden's flexible work arrangements, New Zealand's pay equity legislation, and Canada's gender-balanced boards are just a few examples of best practices that have shown positive results in addressing gender pay disparities.
Sharing these practices and learning from each other's successes can multiply the application of progressive measures to promote equal pay. Purpose-driven networking at all levels plays a crucial role in disseminating these ideas and encouraging their implementation. On this Equal Pay Day 2023, let us commit to not only recognising the disparities but also sharing actionable steps toward building a world where equal pay is a reality for everyone.
