Learning is Forever

I kicked off the DAG (Disabled and Gifted) Group Coaching - pun intended as a loud and proud dag - last night with the first of three groups of neurodivergent adults in our program over the next 8-weeks.

One of the themes we covered was learning style.

I like to make all my courses neuroaccessible and ensure I'm meeting the different needs of all my participants.

Everyone learns differently.

If you're neurodivergent, it's likely you learn in a way that further diverges from the 'norm' (as usual). If your staff are neurodivergent, you need to know this.

Today, I woke up to the news that one in three of our children in Australia cannot read proficiently at the cost of $40 billion over their lifetimes.

Having one main way of teaching and a rigid, inflexible, inaccessable education system that doesn't provide for the diversity of minds it educates is at the heart of this problem.

But the problem stems from a neuronormative society that still doesn't adequately acknowledge or support brains that think differently.

You never stop learning, how to be an adult, how to work in many jobs, how to be a parent, a new hobby, a new health condition to manage, a new sport, and so on.

The day I stop learning is the day I start to worry (more... anyway).

Where you're new to a job or workplace and learning lots, or in a role you've been in for years where you're constantly working to improve either you're ability to do that role or make it better for the organisation you work for.

Learning is life. Learning is forever.

We need to prioritise learning accessibility at work just as much as we do in our schools.

Neurodiversity is far more than a DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging) issue. It's also fundamental to employment success, productivity, efficiency, and all the nice things people like to focus on in our capitalist society.

If you are not convinced neurodiversity is important to acknowledge and promote in your organisation, then you're missing the point.
