The Learning Curve of ChatGPT: A beginner's guide!

The Learning Curve of ChatGPT: A beginner's guide!

Hello, LinkedIn community, Matt here. Today, I want to talk about a topic that’s close to my heart: You may have heard recently terms like AI/ Machines Learning/ Large Language Models and ChatGPT. These are big words - So what do they mean? It's a new way to search for information. It's CTRL+F and google on steroids. In the evolution of sharing information we have gone from card catalog's, to computers, to google and now GPT. Below I'll do my best of explaining how to get started without too much jargon. If I slip up call me out in the comments below!

ChatGPT is search program developed by the company OpenAI. Try the free version in the link above or on my site linked below. It’s designed to generate human-like text based on the prompts it’s given. But like any new technology, it takes a bit of time to learn and understand. Why is that? Let’s dive in.

Firstly, ChatGPT is a machine learning model. It learns from a vast amount of data it’s been trained on. However, it doesn’t understand context in the same way humans do. As far as we know, It doesn’t know about the world, it doesn’t have beliefs or desires. It generates responses based on patterns it has learned. This means that the way you phrase your search can significantly impact the responses you get.

Secondly, ChatGPT doesn’t have a memory of past interactions. Each conversation with it is independent of the others. This means that it doesn’t learn from past mistakes or successes in the same way a human would. It’s a tool, and like any tool, it requires a bit of practice to use effectively.

So, how can you start learning to use ChatGPT effectively? Here are a couple of prompt examples to get you started:

  1. If you’re looking for a detailed response, try to be as specific as possible in your prompt. For example, instead of asking “Tell me about time management,” you might ask “Write me a 5 minute training about time management. The goal is to help entry level employees be more productive”
  2. If you want to have a more conversational interaction, you can use a series of shorter prompts. For example, you might start with “Hello, how are you?” and then follow up with "Can you tell me a joke or ice breaker?”
