With the rapid pace of technological change and the rapid evolution of working practices (made even faster by the onset of the pandemic), employers must ask themselves this pertinent question:
"What will the future of the workforce look like, and how will we adapt to this ever-changing environment?"
Learning and upskilling will become essential, and both employers and employees will need to prioritize these activities:
Learning and Development at The Heart of Everything We Do.
Traditionally, candidates would enter a specific industry and hone their skills over the years in their specific niche. Nowadays, a “Working to Learn” approach is needed in order to keep abreast of the constant innovations in our ever-evolving fields.
With the speed of technological change, the next industry disruptor could be right around the corner (Fingers crossed it's not another pandemic. Yikes) Employees must be prepared to adapt to new demands and broaden their knowledge base in response to change.
Adaptability over Specialization
Earlier the demand for a particular skill could last for decades, or even a person’s entire career. However, due to the relentless pace of innovation, demand cycles for skills or even job roles are much shorter these days.
As a result, learning agility and adaptability are being sought after as the most valuable assets in potential employees, rather than specialization. If dinosaurs could evolve, then so can we!

This holds true from the perspective of employers as well, as companies must incentivize learning and development, to help diversify the skill-set of their talent pool as well as make them future-ready.
Learning by Generation.
We are currently at a crossroads in which the workforce is made up of four generations:
Baby Boomers , Gen-X, Millennials, and Gen-Z
This lends itself to a blend of different working and learning styles As a result, businesses must ensure that learning modules are tailored to ensure that all employees benefit equally from the content of these trainings. Older generations may have a greater affinity with communication and interpersonal skills, whereas younger employees may have a greater grasp of technological skillsets like the use of Zoom, Microsoft teams and social media.
To summarize, Learning and Development is the future, and a strong and continuous learning culture will not only help employees stay on top of their game, but it will also help companies retain those employees who have a desire for continuous improvement.
