Learning Articulate Storyline

Learning Articulate Storyline

Last week, I reached out to my LinkedIn network to ask for help with resources for learning to use Articulate Storyline. I had so many great responses that I thought I would compile them here. I can't offer my own reviews of these yet, but I'm looking forward to exploring them in more depth.

Become proficient in PowerPoint first

Several people mentioned that it would be helpful to get to know PowerPoint really well first, as much of its behaviour is similar, and PowerPoint presentations can be imported into Storyline.

@Tim Slade's YouTube channel includes some videos about PowerPoint tips and tricks.

Just get stuck in

Many people advised just getting stuck in and starting to develop a project and try different things without tutorials or courses.

Free tutorials

Some sources of free tutorials mentioned were:

LinkedIn Learning

Courses available to subscribers on LinkedIn Learning include:

Paid courses

Tim Slade 's ELearning Academy includes 8 weeks of lessons and activities to learn how to use Storyline to develop a sample project. The next available cohort is in January 2023.

Devlin Peck 's Storyline Project Lab includes eight real-world projects to learn Storyline's features and functions, and support from a project team and lab partner, for $999.

Udemy offers several courses about Articulate Storyline, with prices between £19.99 and £59.99. They have frequent sales, including a current sale on until 31st August 2022.

Alexander Salas, CPTD, CTT, SCM, SCPO ' LXD Launch offers a course for $29.

Challenges

The E-Learning Heroes challenges on Articulate's website came highly recommended. Elizabeth Thomasian suggested having a separate section within a portfolio for projects created for the challenges.

Workflow

H. Sabo gave a really good outline of a step-by-step process to building a project:

"Take time to understand how each section functions. When you have that down, lay out all of your course in terms of scenes. Second, add any notes and voice over. Use your voice or text-based - doing those two things will provide organization, and prompts to actually build each slide, just like animated movie makers do! Finally, research any particular interactions on YouTube, but I would suggest taking advantage of some of the pre made slides to save time for the more complex ones. Then run through your creation at least twice, and if you can get input from others, even better!"

Mackenzie Stolz described her learning process:

"I reviewed tons of projects on?elearningheroes.com?for ideas. I made a list of several portfolio projects I wanted to make. Then I started with the organizing and storyboarding of the projects. Once I had that ready, I watched YouTube videos that were specific to the projects' needs. This allowed me to come out with portfolio work and also learn skills I could build on with future projects."

Don't! Try Adobe Captivate instead

There was also some debate about whether Articulate Storyline was the best authoring tool to start with. Some people suggested that Storyline is very expensive to buy, and you can't learn all the basics within the 30 day trial. Adobe Captivate has a monthly subscription (although it appears to be an annual commitment, with 50% of the remaining contract obligation being payable if it is cancelled within the year). Once you have learnt either Storyline or Captivate, it is less of a learning curve to move to the other software.

Other recommended software was Camtasia or Snag It.

As Rick Jacobs pointed out, "It’s the skillsets that matter, not the tool... developing the skills is what matters."
