Learnership has arrived and this is what people are saying about it

I'm excited to announce that

This is an extremely important book. It marks a shift in how we think about schooling. Where the skill of learning is valued as highly as the skill of teaching. Where the responsibility for growth is shared equally between the teacher and the student. Where achievement of short-term outcomes is balanced against ensuring we reach our long-term goals. Where we explicitly set students up to succeed in school and thrive in life. Where schools are focused on building a culture of growth to ensure students build agency in their lives. I’ve been privileged ?to be receive some glowing reviews for Learnership, from eminent educators and passionate school leaders alike. Today I leave you with some of their reflections on Learnership and invite you to purchase your copy and to begin your journey of creating more skilful learners.?

Special edition signed and embossed copies of Learnership can be purchased directly from me . Learnership is also available on Amazon , Booktopia , Barnes and Noble .

What the reviewers had to say...

I have looked long and hard for a great book on how to include the teaching of learning strategies in the classroom – and finally found it.? Anderson uses the latest research coupled with a deep classroom understanding of merging thinking and learning WITH the curriculum to empower teachers and students with the optimal strategies for success.

Veteran educator, James Anderson, makes the case for cultivating student agency and empowering life-long learners. His thought-provoking book offers not only an optimistic and inspiring vision of possibilities but provides leaders with a detailed manual for transforming their schools to embrace a culture of learnership.

James Anderson puts students at the center of learning by providing greater clarity and precision about?defining how learning evolves from beginning to becoming self-directed as efficacious thinkers. This book illuminates and weaves together skills, attitudes, mindsets, and dispositions all learners need to become more powerfully capable of addressing the complexities and challenges of a rapidly changing world. ?

We need this book!?James Anderson has taken what we need to create for effective learning in schools, expressed it in words, backed it with theory, given us a practical and realistic roadmap of how to create it, and shows us how to take our community with us in a way that is connected with the realities of day-to-day school life.?He takes much of the conventional thinking about the relationship between teaching and learning and turns it on its head in a way that can only inspire and excite those passionate about educating students for the futures they will encounter!? He nudges us, as educational leaders, into our own learning zones.? I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone in education who wants their students to thrive.

Reading Learnership made me want to apply for jobs as a principal – who wouldn’t want to lead a school with the deeply inspiring vision and equipping guidance provided by this book.

What resonates most about?Learnership?is that it posits every member of the school community as a learner. By sharing the responsibility for learning as a partnership between students, their families and teachers, leaders can create and sustain their vision for a high expectations school culture. Through our school’s partnership with James over many years, learnership has been embedded into our teaching, learning, wellbeing, coaching and leading practices.?Learnership?challenges teachers to focus on their own growth and attitudes towards challenge, learning and performance. Personally, it has challenged and nudged me to aspire to more challenging goals, ‘to get better rather than get busy’, and rediscover ‘wonderment and awe’ in my professional life.

Asquith Girls High School?

In Learnership, James Anderson calls for schools to lift learning from an act to an art. He centralises the learner in the educative process, urging school leaders to recognise the importance of students becoming ‘masters of their own learning’. Anderson laments the learner passivity that classroom environments and practices sometimes inadvertently create and envisions a leaning space where students are beckoned to move beyond self and externally imposed limitations. Delving into the work of Carol Dweck, Anderson contends that mindset is the ‘auto-pilot of learning’. This book belongs in the hands of principals intent on reimagining learning possibilities in their schools and opening their students’ eyes to their own capacity to grow.

Learnership speaks to leaders striving to create and nurture growth-oriented cultures of learning at their schools, to equip students with skills to succeed in class, and ultimately - to inspire learning behaviours and life skills needed for young people to thrive in life. I valued the clarity and refinement of John Hattie’s ‘know thy impact’, as James shifts the focus from teacher performance alone, to emphasise student agency in equal measures, for meaningful life-long learning.??

The book's structure is well-suited for educational leaders, providing a framework for guiding their teams in developing growth-oriented learning environments. It could serve as a valuable tool for change management, helping teachers progress towards creating such spaces. While James acknowledges the dedication of teachers, he underscores that teaching alone is insufficient; students must also become skilled learners.

"Learnership: Raising the status of learning from an act to an art" is a highly readable book with well-argued and accessible concepts. It has the potential to reshape our perspective on teaching and learning, elevating them from mere acts to more refined practices. James's work may influence the field of education significantly, prompting a re-evaluation of teaching and learning methodologies.
