LEARNABILTIY 23 November

Winter is coming.

So here are my LEARNABILITY nuggets to help you become a better learner for what lies ahead.

?? Leaders, Managers, and Business Owners

EXPERIMENT

I invite you to take a moment to think about your daily routines.

Are you sticking to what you know because it feels easy, safe and efficient?

Comfort zones are nice and cozy, aren't they? But they can also hold you back from learning, growing, and discovering new opportunities. Staying with the familiar can limit your creativity, stifle problem-solving, and stop you from experiencing the satisfaction of learning something new - even if it doesn’t go perfectly.

This is why I'm inviting you to do a little experimentation... try doing something differently and see what happens.

Experimentation doesn’t have to mean taking big risks. It’s about testing small changes. For example, try approaching a task differently, delegating a decision you’d normally handle yourself, or brainstorming solutions with your team instead of deciding solo. Sure, it might feel uncomfortable or even lead to a misstep, but every experiment teaches you something valuable. Over time, you’ll develop creativity, resilience, and even discover better ways to work or lead.

So why not start small? Pick one thing (just one) and approach it in a new way this week. It might be as simple as changing how you run a meeting or seeking input from someone you wouldn’t normally consult. Experimenting helps break the monotony, sparks fresh ideas, and builds confidence in handling uncertainty.

You’ll never know what’s possible unless you try.

The Gibbs Reflective Cycle

I'd love to take the credit for this, but the Gibbs Reflective Cycle is named after the esteemed psychologist Professor Graham Gibbs.

Have you ever had to deal with a tough situation at work and then afterwards turned the page and moved on without thinking much about it?

Not taking the time to reflect on our experiences is missing out on a fundamental learning opportunity, which I think is a a great pity.

I know it's tempting to rush on and tackle the next urgent thing on your plate. But pausing to reflect on what you've just done is one of the simplest, most effective ways to learn and grow. The Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle offers a straightforward framework to do just that, helping you analyse experiences, understand what worked (and what didn’t), and create a plan for future success.

It has 6 parts.

  1. Facts: Describe what happened
  2. Feelings: What emotions were involved?
  3. Evaluate: What went well and what didn't?
  4. Analise: Why was that?
  5. Conclusion: What can you learn from this?
  6. Action plan: So what will you do differently next time?

Whether you’re managing people, hiring talent, or steering your own growth, taking time to reflect helps you spot patterns, improve decision-making, and build emotional intelligence. The process doesn’t have to be complicated - just describe the situation, evaluate what happened, and plan how you’d approach it differently next time. Even five minutes of reflection after a meeting or project can make a big difference.

Taking time to reflect can lead to better self-awareness, stronger relationships, and a proactive approach to growth. Without it, you risk repeating mistakes and missing out on key lessons. So, don’t just move on from your experiences, but pause, think, and take charge of your development. Reflection isn’t a chore - it’s your edge in a fast-moving professional world.

Sprints

Ever feel like you know you could be improving but just don’t have the time or headspace to focus on it? That’s where Sprints come in - a simple, structured program designed to help busy professionals achieve real, meaningful progress in just one month.

I've been running Sprints since the summer, and the results speak for themselves.

A Sprint brings together handful of participants (I run them with three) for three 1-hour sessions over four weeks.

At the first session, everyone sets a personal development goal such as learning to strengthen their LinkedIn profile or learning how to better tackle stressors in daily life. The group collaborates to create a plan and holds each other accountable along the way.

At the midway point, participants share their learnings and reflect on their progress.

In the final session, they demonstrate their new skills and celebrate their success.

Sprints are fast, focussed, and built on self-managed learning, where you choose your path and take charge of your development.

Sprints are ideal for leaders, professionals, and entrepreneurs - or anyone who wants to make progress but struggles to commit to longer programs. Whether run informally with friends or as a structured HR initiative, Sprints are already making a difference. In the Professional Speakers Association of Spain , monthly Sprints are helping members improve skills and move forwards on long-delayed goals.

Why not try it for yourself? One month is all it takes to get moving and start growing.

At 12:45 PM GMT, a panel of young voices takes the stage to share their unique perspectives in a session titled “Learning Without Being Schooled – New Visions for Education.” Their firsthand experiences challenge conventional paradigms and offer a glimpse into the future of learning.

The day wraps up with a dynamic ‘Ask the Expert’ Q&A Session from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM GMT, where founders of innovative schools and learning communities will share practical advice and answer your questions. This session is perfect for anyone considering launching a new educational project or looking to implement fresh ideas in their community.
