'Learn as You Go' in Open Burning

Learning is at the heart of Engg X programme on Open Burning, as it is a new, complex and unknown pathway towards an intended change. We are trying to share our learning as we progress, in addition to the garnulated learning at certain milestones. Recently Institute of Urbanism has hosted a forum with an active support of mainstream media as part of their campaign. This was an innovative action and interesting in many ways. Let me share some learning, before it distills with other priorities;

1) The use of professional journalists and news media gave a lot of enthusiasm to the forum, especially the creation of the questions, asking, concluding etc. All the participants and viewers were attentive.

2) Pre and post preparation was good. This led to a number of newspapers articles on the following day (listed below). This means a potential outreach to millions on a rather unknown subject.

3) Use of a simple forum space, such as twitter space. Despite some connectivity challenges, this worked well.

4) Selection of speakers from different backgrounds, including public health, official agencies, researchers and other campaigners. A good mix.

The next day I saw another interesting initiative from Srinivas Chary Vedala on open burning. Lovely title and excellent potential outreach from Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) on this campaign.
