Learn To Work With Others

Construction is one of these crazy industries where you learn to work with people who you sometimes want to choke out. Folks that just drive you bonkers for one reason or another. But you can’t.?

Not because an 8x10 cell isn’t all that comfortable. But because they are connected to how you make your living. Whether it’s the owner, supplier, GC, or another contractor you often work alongside. Whatever the case, you have to work with them. So we learn to work with them.?

Early in my career, I didn’t understand this. I didn’t understand that you can’t burn bridges. That the people and circles you run in are small. Didn’t understand that relationships are everything and that working relationships are necessary.?

I’m not talking about having them over for BBQ. I’m talking about being able to work with them on projects. Can you get the job done? And this is a lost art. Tolerance.?

It’s one of those virtues that we should all pay a little more attention to. If we did, we’d be a better society for it. Not jumping to conclusions. But taking in something for what it is and seeing how to move through it.?

Work with people. You don’t have to like them, but you do have to get along enough to get the job done.?
