Five executives with similar workplace experience are being considered for a senior-level executive position. All are college graduates, two with prestigious master’s degrees.? Three have worked in nationally known and respected organizations.
Who is most likely to be selected, the person with a Harvard MBA or a Master’s from The Wharton School of Business? Who holds the highest professional certification available in the industry? Perhaps the applicant whose resume outlines several impressive, relevant achievements?
The answer:? The qualified applicant who did the best job communicating their value, with specific attention to the prospective employer’s priorities and needs. It is all about your performance in the interview.?
Today’s executive and management employment market is experiencing a shrinkage in the number of available jobs, and therefore, the competition for each position is intense. In virtually every search, every candidate is competitively qualified and experienced, so employers are looking beyond the finer print of academic credentials and experience. ?
Today, it is all about what value you will bring to the table and how effectively you communicate that information to the key stakeholders in any given search for talent.?
But wait.? The vast majority of applicants claim they perform well in job interviews. ?
As a former executive recruiter who has interviewed thousands of executives and managers across a 27-year career, I can report with a high degree of confidence that the vast majority do not. Most are average, which is to say fair; a small percentage are good, and fewer still are great.
Now, here is the good news. ?
There is an important secret to success in career management that most people ignore that creates an opening for you to succeed. ? You can outperform and pass your competitors when you master the art of interviewing — communicating your value in a memorable and meaningful way.? People are not born with this skill; it is learned and developed with commitment, knowledge, and tireless practice.
Like so many aspects of career management, it is not complicated, but it is not easy.
If you want to learn more, talk to John Self, who has spent his career interviewing people. ?
One of the common frustrations I hear from executives in the job market is: “I have never had this much trouble finding a job before. I know some of the people getting hired, and they are not as good as I am.”
My short response: there are more of you out there in the same boat competing for fewer jobs.? It is hard work to advance to the interview.
Stop losing to lesser competitors!?
