Learn to Use WordPress, Issue #44

Learn to Use WordPress, Issue #44

When I launched my Virtual Assistant business back in 2010, one of the first things I did was build a WordPress website.

I knew my new business needed one, and I chose to build it myself because I also knew that having solid skills in WordPress would help me build my business and make money.

If you’re interested in learning WordPress, here’s what I suggest:

  1. Open a webhosting account.?If you don’t have a URL (a domain) already, many times a free one will come with your webhosting account. Choose a company that has good support, like GoDaddy or Media Temple, so that you can get help when you get stuck.
  2. Install WordPress yourself.?Usually, web hosting companies have “one-click” installs available which makes this very simple. Choose a “theme” that’s easy to work with. There are thousands of themes out there but start with one that’s simple so you can understand how the pieces fit together. (I suggest “Twenty-Sixteen” to get started.)
  3. Master the “native” functionality first.?Before you go crazy with all the millions of plugins and add-ons for WordPress, explore the basics. Create menus, play with widgets, write some test posts and pages. Add your logo or a test logo, change the colors, upload photos and create links. Get as comfortable as possible.
  4. Make it live.?Once you’re satisfied with your WordPress creation, make it live and continue to use it. Add new functionality, like calendar scheduling software, the ability to take credit cards, or updating your services page. The more you use it, the better you’ll get.

I don’t build websites anymore; I have a developer on my team who does a much better job than I. But building a few sites and updating and maintaining over a hundred has sharpened my skills and enabled me to have a steady stream of work.

Learning WordPress has been a very good investment!
