Learn, unlearn and relearn to stay ahead

Learn, unlearn and relearn to stay ahead

Today the world is changing and developing at a breakneck speed. In today's dynamic world, change only is constant. The most important thing is the attitude to learn. Not just this, we should know what to learn, unlearn and relearn to grow both in our career and in our personal life.

Learning, unlearning, and relearning is a cycle. Let us understand this cycle. We gain or acquire knowledge or skill by study or experience (learning), discard something learned (unlearning) and learn something again (relearning). One follows this process to grow.

Let us understand this -

Learning is acquiring new understanding, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences.?

Unlearning is the process of discarding something from your memory. It is to make an effort to forget your usual way of doing something so that you can learn a new and sometimes better way.?

Relearning is regaining or learning a skill or ability that has been partially or entirely lost. In simple terms, it is to learn something again.?

Most of us would have heard of learning, relearning but not unlearning. Unlearning, as a word, might be new but many of us practice this in our life – both at career and individual level.?

One must master the learn, unlearn and relearn cycle to be successful. Unlearning plays a vital role at the professional and individual levels. Employees need to unlearn to move forward, work more effectively, and further contribute.?

Tips to unlearn:

  1. Foster a sense of willingness: Willingness is the key to progress. It is impossible to promote unlearning as long as there is an openness towards it.?
  2. Be open: Be open to unlearning. It is a question of mindset. The key here is to explore the unexplored or explore the explored in a newer way.
  3. Pursuing the unfamiliar: Pursue things that are not familiar and get to know them. It can be as simple as new technology or software.
  4. Foster Curiosity: We learn out of our curiosity and a zeal to grow. So be curious.
  5. Learn from others, especially from your opposite: Learning from others who think differently and newly is the key. Surround yourself with people who think opposite or are creative in getting old things in a newer and faster way.
  6. Write a note: Write down situations or identify your patterns that are old and are hampering growth.
  7. Work in teams or get a mentor: Working individually may not work all time in unlearning. Working in a team or getting a mentor would help.?
  8. Set your goals: Write down your goals and timelines. Measure it regularly. The process continues until you achieve your goals.?

I have many examples of embracing this cycle that helped me stay ahead.

To conclude, one must understand and embrace the process to stay ahead on a career and a personal level.
