Different shapes and sizes get expressly tailored to substitute or replicate human actions. The main goal remains the same, accomplishing work with more accuracy, quickness, and safety. Today, many rely on robots to excel in tasks effortlessly. Such rich context sets an ideal stage for a robotics 101 talk! Read below to find out all about robots and pick the best type for you.?

Let’s start from the beginning! Where Do Robots Come From??

Robots are the end product of a truly unique multidisciplinary science known as Robotics, which is dedicated to the design and manufacturing of non-human machines.?

Combining engineering and computer science principles, robotics assembles together electronics, mechanical, and electrical components to create a solid structure capable of performing tasks relegated to humans and animals.?

Over the last couple of decades, robots gained booming industrial popularity, getting vastly applied in a wide range of sectors, including military, construction, and supply chain. ?

Main Robot Components?

As mentioned before, robots exist in many shapes and sizes, ranging from industrial robotic arms to famous humanoids as R2D2 and C3PO. Yet, they share commonalities in their structure’s components:?

  • Body: Basically, the frame or shell is the first thing seen when making eye contact with a robot. The body pieces together all the elements set to motion every action?
  • Sensors: Much like humans capture information through their senses, sensors are robots’ mechanisms to stay informed of their surroundings. Sensor devices provide them with visual, tactile, and audio data for task execution?
  • Control system: The brain of the robot! The CPU processes information and coordinates the mechanical and motion actions that enable task execution as programmed?
  • Actuators: The key pieces to enable energy conversion into movement?
  • Power source: Robots can run batteries or on a continuous power supply backed by sources, such as hydraulic, solar, and pneumatic. DC or AC motors are installed to convert electrical energy into mechanical.?

Type of Robots. Find Out Which One Can Serve Your Niche?

Sometimes robots are crafted to do simple tasks like cleaning the home or pulling heavy materials. Other times, they are tailored to assist top medical professionals in surgeries. Clearly, their market offers a wide scope of services. For that very reason, we organized them by type and function, hoping to showcase their virtues more neatly. ?

  • Industrial robots. They are used in the industrial environment for various purposes such as lifting very heavy components or moving parts from one place to another. They are great for repetitive actions like fitting screws or assembling components?

  • Service robots. Mostly deployed in the retail, healthcare, and hospitality sectors to maximize their mobility and human interaction capabilities. They are also fit to service more demanding settings, such as in space, agricultural applications, and police work.?

There are many examples to choose from, but I’m going to focus on those captivating my attention at the moment:?

  • Drones for land mapping and surveying?
  • Rovers voyaging across Mars to collect samples?
  • Robot dogs to screen disaster areas?
  • Warehouse robots?
  • Self-driving cars?
  • ROV and AUV for subsea environments.?

No doubt, robot applications are getting easier to spot each day. And teams everywhere seem happy to embrace the changes they’re bringing along.?

More Growth Is Coming in the Years Ahead for the Industrial & Domestic Robots Markets?

Robotics is here to stay!?

In a Global Industrial Robotics Market Revenue Review available at Statista, in 2021 the global market for industrial robots was sized around USD 43.8 Billion. By 2027, the very same market is expected to reach USD 63.9 Billion. ?

As to the domestic sector, the Global Household Robot Market was valued at USD 6.81 Billion in 2021. It is expected to reach USD 21.94 Billion by 2027 (source: Mordor Intelligence ).?

Impressive figures for a remarkable industry! Especially, looking forward to seeing the innovations coming to the domestic sector, as its value will triple over the next five years. ?

I believe that robotics is already the key driver of competitiveness and flexibility in large-scale manufacturing industries. Without it, many successful manufacturing industries wouldn’t be able to compete from their current bases of operation. Robots will continue to gain acceptance across sectors. As we already know, their main position in society is in a capacity to assist humans by taking on the jobs that are dirty, dull, and dangerous allowing greater productivity.?
