Learn Transactional Analysis
“The destiny of every human being is decided by what goes on inside his skull when confronted by what goes on outside his skull.”Eric Berne
In the early 20th century, Sigmund Freud first established that the human psyche is multi-faceted. Since then, new theories continue to be put forward, all concentrating on the principle that each one of us has parts of our personality which surface and affect our behaviour according to different circumstances.
Whether you're in business, a parent, a coach or interested in personal development, Transactional Analysis will certainly enrich your relations and your understanding of yourself.
Transactional Analysis (TA) is a psychoanalytic form of therapy developed during the 1960s by Dr. Eric Berne.TA is also considered a social psychology and a method to improve communication. Transactional Analysis helps us understand how we relate and transact and gives us useful tools for self-knowledge and personal development.
We do take on certain life scripts(existential positions) that we pick up mainly the first 7 years of our life and TA allows us to unpack and highlight certain subconscious patterns that lead to the games we play in life: some good games and some bad games.
Every time we communicate, we are doing so from one of our three ego states, our Parent, Adult or Child. Our feelings at the time determine which ego state speaks , and at any time something can trigger a shift from one state to another. When we respond, we are also doing this from one of the three states, and it is in the analysis of these stimuli and responses that the essence of Transactional Analysis lies.
At the core of Berne's theory is the rule that effective transactions (i.e. successful communications) must be complementary.
The goal of transactional analysis is to help us gain and maintain autonomy by strengthening the Adult state to attain successful communications and game-free relationships.
The theory outlines how we have developed, how we relate and communicate with others, and offers interventions which will enable us to change and grow. Transactional Analysis is underpinned by the philosophy that:
1. We have the capacity to change
2. We have the right to live a fulfilled life and be OK
Stop the games is the “very first step”, replace them with direct and honest interactions and eventually abandon the dysfunctional life script, bow to the audience and start a healthy script.
