Learn more about how Sarah and Jen make a difference

This week was #NationalVolunteerWeek and BCI is taking this opportunity to recognize volunteers for their efforts. As part of our commitment to our community, BCI offers each employee two full days of paid volunteer time every year.

Today, we feature two employees, Sarah Dorrington and Jen Scharien, CPA , each with their own reason for getting involved. Their commitment to making a positive impact in our communities is inspiring and sets a great example for others.

Jen Scharien, an associate on the corporate & data operations team, has been volunteering for as long as she can remember. She’s worked with various organizations, including Operation Trackshoes , Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria , and the United Way Southern Vancouver Island UnitedNow! young adult volunteer committee. Jen also organized an event for CFA Society Victoria , entitled Indigenous Finance: A Truth & Reconciliation event, to establish a foundation of Indigenous history and experience and then move to understand economic development opportunities that embrace and advance reconciliation. She believes that volunteering is a priority and is always looking at how she can make a greater impact.

Sarah Dorrington, an associate in our public markets team, is a founding member of our employee-led financial literacy committee, which aims to provide accessible and free education on financial literacy for British Columbia's youth. Sarah is a passionate advocate for financial education and believes that it should be a fundamental right for all individuals, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. Sarah volunteers as an educator with JA British Columbia and delivers tailored, curriculum-aligned programming to students from grades four through 12.

We’re proud to have BCIers who are committed to making a positive impact in the communities in which they live and work. Taking inspiration from these stories - do you have a favorite organization or way to give back to your community? Let us know in the comments!
