Lessons for Leaders:? The NFL Edition

In the United States, many people celebrate the start of the new NFL football season with similar enthusiasm for a major holiday.? There is plenty of outfit planning, drinking, feasting, and money changing hands happening in living rooms, sports bars and backyards throughout the country this time of year.??

You may be surprised to learn that elements of The Learn Lead Lift Framework? were partially inspired by the insights of a former? NFL quarterback, David Fales. ? To be honest, I was a little surprised when this happened, too.??

What We're Exploring and Engaging

Image of the book cover, The Gap and The Gain. Blue cover with black, yellow and white letters for the book name and authors, Dan Sullivan and Ben Hardy

In preparation for an upcoming 2-day session with CEO’s I’ve been reading The Gap and The Gain co-authored by entrepreneur turned coach, Dan Sullivan, and organizational psychologist, Ben Hardy.? My colleague and co-facilitator, Randy Haykin of Haykin Consulting, shared the book with me and from the moment I learned what it was about, I was hooked!

As we approach the end of one calendar year, leaders are often focused on generating budgeting forecasts and setting strategic priorities for 2024, The Gap and The Gain reminds us not to overlook the progress we made in 2023.? In fact the authors argue that when we focus on how far we’ve come (the gain) we are happier and more productive than when we focus on how far we have yet to go (the gap.)???

Sounds incredibly simple, but like most mindset shifts we might aspire to, it’s not easy.? Most workplaces, families and institutions today operate according to “gap” thinking.? Hustle culture reinforces this - what we accomplished yesterday doesn’t matter much, what matters is what we accomplish today or tomorrow.??

The downside of living in the gap emerges more clearly the farther we advance along whatever path to success we envision (financial freedom, career, etc.) and the more experience we accumulate. And so does the upside of living in the gain.?
