Learn How to Stress Less
Academic life is a nightmare dressed like a daydream. If the unending piles of assignments and quizzes didn’t get the better of you, self-doubt, crippling finances, parental pressure and relationship drama certainly will. And to top that off, being bombarded with an overwhelming amount of insinuation from the nosy relatives because that’s how we Bangladeshis roll. As enticing as an escape may seem, sometimes all you can do is suck it up and reel it in. Or you can master some sure-fire tweaks to soften the blow – your choice.
Your Body is Your Temple
Don’t be fooled, we are all in for the body positive movement but that’s a topic for another day. Taking care of your physical self goes a long way in curbing stress. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and exercising on a regular basis. This advice may sound like a broken record but take our words for it.
Aim Low
Yes, you read that right. Sometimes you need to realize that you may be overreaching. Set realistic goals according to your limit. We do not advocate slacking but studies reveal that by fine-tuning your goals you can relieve stress and boost performance.
You vs. Me
Remember that thing we used to do as kids when we used to compare each other’s heights or fight over who has more Barbies or Pokemon cards? Yeah, that was cute only till 5th grade. Stop stacking yourself up against others and spiraling into chronic stress.
Don’t Listen to Your Parents
This is not a drill. Our parents may be our rock in tough times but sometimes they can be the rock that drags us down. Even though they mean well, it is best sometimes to discount their nagging and ranting about how you are the biggest disappointment of their lives. Don’t dwell on it, you got this.
Something to Look Forward to
To stave off academic stress, incorporate some anticipation into your life. The disappointment you felt when you thought puberty would make you hot was only the beginning. Barring all past failures, find something to look forward to – be it simply a movie night, a hangout, a date. A heightened level of anticipation increases our endorphin levels and this leads to greater productivity.
Keep Calm and Don’t Procrastinate
This may be cliched, but by now you have probably learnt the hard way that it does ring true. So stop slacking and bring on your A-game. The sense of control that you get, that’s the real kicker.
Set Your Priorities Straight
Ever wonder if you are stressed because you over commit and under-deliver? It can be easy to lose focus and become over involved in non-academic commitments. Realign your priorities when stress levels go a little out of control.
One Step at a Time
You don’t have to chug down all your course load in one go, size them down into manageable portions and work one step at a time. This will make your work seem less daunting and more accomplish able.
Dance it Out
When escalating stress is kicking your rear end on its rear end, just bust a move and shake it off!
