Learn How to Set Boundaries: "Open for Business" doesn't mean "You're Open 24/7

A BIG HELLO and thanks for being here!? I appreciate you taking time for a quick lesson in boundaries.? If you don't have boundaries, or know what they are, YOU NEED TO READ THIS NOW.

I'm sharing with you my first biggest business boundary lesson.? It was having an office and setting business hours.? Please note I'm going back to 1998, way before COVID rocked our world and life changed forever.? Meaning having an office now isn't a big deal.? But, if you don't set your "Open for Business" hours you are going to:

?? Be Overrun by clients.

?? Take on too much work.

?? Not have time for YOURSELF.

I'll admit I was terrified to set business hours. Then I found my first coach.? Worked it out with her, and it made sense.

Blocking my time, prioritizing my day and evening, and balancing my personal life with being a solopreneur became the norm.

Let's face, it if you work for yourself there's always something that needs to be done, or shows up unannounced.

No one "dies" if you don't answer that client's midnight text or set specific times for reading and responding to emails.

It can work if you're willing to step beyond your comfort zone.? Having a revolving door and constantly being interrupted by notifications on your smart phone going off like fireworks doesn't add to your day, it takes away from it.

Unless you're on call for an emergency, YOU NEED TO SET YOUR HOURS.

If You're Open 24/7 how long do you think you will last?

In today's fast-paced world, where businesses are constantly striving to meet the demands of their clients and stay competitive, the phrase "open for business" has taken on a new meaning. While it's important for companies to be accessible and responsive, it's equally crucial to establish boundaries and avoid the misconception that being open for business translates to being available 24/7.

I understand the importance of balance and self-care, and in this blog post, we will explore why maintaining boundaries and avoiding burnout are essential even in a business setting.

The Dangers of 'Always On' Culture

The lines between work and having a personal life have become blurred for many. With smartphones and email access at our fingertips, it's easy to fall into the trap of being ON around the clock. However, this constant availability can lead to burnout, exhaustion, and a decline in overall leading to dark and dismal place.

As a Holistic Business Coach, I often work with clients who have experienced the negative effects of an 'always ON' culture. Burnout, stress, and strained relationships are common consequences of constantly being at the beck and call of work, clients and family. It's crucial to remember that your business should serve you, not the other way around.? Isn't that why you went into business in the first place?

Setting Boundaries for Success

Establishing boundaries is an integral part of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. It's not about neglecting your responsibilities or customers but about creating a structure that allows you to be productive, focused, and present when you are 'open for business.'? If your car needs service does the Dealership answer their phone, text or email?? NO.? But you know when they will be 'Open for Business' because they have hours.

These hours prevent clients from interrupting a late night at the office trying to get something done, eating dinner with your family, or reading a book to fall asleep.? All client's are not created equal to our values.? Choose wisely.

Here are some tips on setting boundaries effectively:

  1. Define Your Work Hours: Clearly communicate your working hours to your clients or customers. Let them know when they can expect a response from you.
  2. Use Automation: Utilize tools like auto-responders or chatbots to manage inquiries and provide information outside of your working hours.
  3. Delegate and Outsource: If possible, delegate tasks or outsource certain responsibilities to ensure you're not overwhelmed with work.
  4. Prioritize Self-Care: Make time for self-care activities like Pilates, wine tasting, hiking, and reading. A well-rested and rejuvenated you is better equipped to handle business challenges.
  5. Practice Mindfulness: Develop the habit of mindfulness to reduce stress and enhance your decision-making abilities. This can help you stay focused and avoid the pitfalls of perfectionism.

The Power of Saying 'No'

One of the key aspects of setting boundaries is learning to say 'NO.' Also, as a business owner, it can be challenging to turn down opportunities or requests, fearing that it might affect your bottom line. However, saying 'no' when necessary is essential for preserving your well-being and avoiding toxic environments or people.

Surprisingly every 'yes' to something means a 'no' to something else, potentially compromising your health, happiness, or the quality of your work. By confidently saying 'NO' to commitments that don't align with your values or goals, you create space for the opportunities that truly matter.

When you open space up by releasing?stagnant blocks, new positive energy can take hold and breakthroughs will happen. It's how the Universe works.

"Open for Business" doesn't mean sacrificing your well-being, sanity, or work-life balance.? Being conscious of establishing healthy boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and saying 'no' when necessary, you will avoid burnout and thrive both personally and professionally. Balance is key, and success should be measured not only in financial terms but also in your overall happiness and well-being.
