Learn From The Pro's
Nick Saban once said “your five choices in life are.
1.????You can be bad at something.
2.????You can be average.
3.????You can be a good.
4.????You can be excellent.
5.????You can be elite.
In order of the elite or excellent we need to have intensity, focus, commitment, drive, and passion.”
The question here is. Why do you do what you do and what level are you going to choose?
Do you have the intensity, focus, commitment, drive, and passion to be excellent or elite in your field?
Now how do we become excellent or elite in our field?
Let me tell you a little story. When I was about 27, I decided it was time for me to learn how to golf. In that process, I received some interesting advice as we all do. Then I decided since that advice wasn't helping me get any better. The next Sunday and sat down and watched the golf tournament that was on. I watched where they put their feet. I watch where they put their hands, how they held their grip, what they did with their arms, if their knees were bent. I started to make little changes and sure enough my score got a little bit better. Eventually I took a lesson and that really made a big difference granted it was only a 20- or 30-minute lesson, but I made a massive difference in my swing and eventually in my score. I like to call this practice "learn from the pros."
Learn From The Pro’s
First, is there someone that you see every day that you consider a pro in your industry? If so, are they willing to share their practices with you? If the answer to this question is yes, then I would schedule weekly time with them to discuss their practices.?If the answer is no have. Then no problem.
There was a time in my career when I walked into our top producer's office and asked him if I could do this with him. His answer to me was. Why would I teach you what I'm doing. You are my competitor. Yeah, I was a little shocked but, not devastated. I just had to find another way.
Second, who do you know in your industry that is not in your market that you would consider a pro. Now because you're not in their market they may be more willing to share their practices with you. This is where you must have some balls. You're going to reach out to them and set up a meeting weekly if they'll allow to discuss their practices.?I would also ask them if you can do a site visit to see them in action.
Third, what are the top conferences in your industry where top producers speak.?I would go to as many as you can.
A lot of people go to conferences and don't listen or participate. The practice here needs to be full participation and take a massive number of notes or recordings.?Meet as many people as you can.
Here's where it gets fun. You are you and they are them therefore you're not going to do exactly what everybody else does. You're going to make a list of the practices that you love. Then you're going to take your top 24 and create an implementation process. Implementing two per month for the next 12 months. I would schedule 2 hours week to work on this implementation.
How do I know this works. 9 years into my career I had been rejected by my coworker for any help or knowledge. Next thing you know I find myself at a conference where top producers in our industry are sharing ideas and helping each other succeed. This was a pivotal moment in my career. I wrote down the top things that I wanted to implement and started immediately when I got home. At the end of 12 months, I had 5X’ed my business.
“Learning from the pros” will have an impact your way, on you and your clients.
