Welcome back to another issue of “Learn. Connect. Grow.”
Happy Mental Health Awareness Month! The whole WCS Team is passionate about bettering the mental health of the LGBTQIA+ Community and it feeds into everything we do as an organisation.
This month our lead article comes from WCS Events Manager Neil Hudson-Basing, who shares how falling in love with running reshaped his understanding of his mental health and the importance of LGBTQ+ inclusive sports and exercise spaces.
We’re also sharing our newest case study which details how we created an LGBTQ+ Leadership Programme for employees at Coventry City Council, details on how you can submit your nomination for the first ever WCS | Awards, practical tips for supporting the mental health of your LGBTQ+ employees and so much more.
Thank you to everyone who has already reached out about working with WCS this Pride Season - there is still time to do so but I encourage you to get those requests in sooner rather than later! Check our our Ideas for Pride 2024 Guide if you need some inspiration.
Wishing you a lovely rest of your week,
Michael Stephens (he/they), Founder of We Create Space
WCS FEATURE:
My Queer Health Journey.
Neil Hudson-Basing shares how he overcame self limiting beliefs and fell in love with the mental health benefits of running as a Queer person.
“I believed that I simply couldn’t do ‘sport’, wouldn’t be any good or that I’d look stupid trying... It’s no surprise that LGBTQ+ people generally feel that sport isn’t for them. A study by Out on the Fields and OutSport, considered to be one of the largest pieces of research in this area, found that 80% of participants have witnessed or experienced homophobia in sport, with homophobic language being the most common. ” - Neil Hudson-Basing
