The modern workforce has been evolving quicker than organizations can adjust to the talent pool's demand for relevant training and development in the workplace. Historically, learning consisted of squeezing in that online course while juggling emails, high-priority tasks, and project deadlines. These competing demands made scheduling live training sessions seem more ideal, however they can also feel disconnected from daily tasks that truly reflect the skills necessary for on-the-job.

So, what’s the solution?

Learning in the flow of work.

This isn't about those mandatory training sessions that you may or may not have the opportunity to apply in your world of work. Instead of separate training programs, learning resources become readily available the moment you need it. For example, a concise tutorial on a new software feature might appear within the application itself. Or, when facing a complex project challenge, employees can access curated microlearning modules offering relevant knowledge and best practices.

Why is this method so impactful??

  • Relevance is Key: Learning is most effective when it directly addresses real-world challenges. "Learning in the flow of work" ensures that knowledge acquisition is closely tied to immediate needs and on-the-job applications.
  • Motivation Booster: By making learning accessible and convenient, this approach fosters a more engaging and enjoyable learning experience. Employees are more likely to actively participate when learning is integrated into their daily routines.
  • Skills that Stick: Applying newly acquired knowledge immediately reinforces learning and improves long-term retention. This approach moves beyond passive information consumption and emphasizes active application and skill development.?

Think of it like this: Instead of cramming for a test, you're constantly upgrading your skills on the job. It's like having a personal tutor readily available to help you find the right solution to solve the problem.

How can your organization begin to implement this?

Start by identifying knowledge or skills gaps to determine where to place your focus. From there, ensure you have the right tools and resources to support ease of employee access.

This doesn't happen overnight. Embracing learning in the flow of work is a long-term strategy for employees to adapt, innovate, and thrive in a dynamic environment which cultivates a culture of continuous learning.
