MIT's Air-Guardian to Elevate Aviation Safety

Developed by MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), the Air-Guardian system blends human and machine by tracking pilot eye movements and neural system attention via "saliency maps." Unlike traditional autopilots that intervene during safety breaches, Air-Guardian identifies early potential risks and has successfully reduced flight risks in field tests. This cooperative control mechanism, based on optimization-cooperative layers and liquid closed-form continuous-time neural networks, provides dynamic adaptability for a balanced human-machine partnership, with potential applications beyond aviation. Air Canada A330-300 Landing Gear Failure Investigation Findings Released

On December 25th, 2021, an Air Canada Airbus A330-300, registered as C-GFAF, experienced landing gear damage during touchdown on Montreal's runway 06L, originating from Fort Lauderdale, FL. The Canadian TSB investigation, released on Oct 4th, 2023, determined the cause as a previously undetected overheating of the bogie beam base metal, stemming from an issue on December 17th, where a bearing on the No. 4 wheel seized, leading to localized overheating. Procedures following the incident permitted axle and bogie beam bushing replacements without thorough damage assessment, omitting non-destructive tests, which would have revealed the beam's compromised integrity.
