Leap Years

You have an extra day this month. Normally, tomorrow would be the last day of February, but since it is a leap year, you get an extra day! What are you going to do with it?

First though, you need to look at all the myths, truths, and circumstances around February 29th?or leap years. Here are some that I think you should be aware of.

• Apparently, being born on February 29 is extremely unlucky, or extremely lucky—guess it depends on which myth you follow.
• Supposedly on leap year day, a man cannot refuse a woman’s plea to get married.
• You should never get divorced or married during a leap year day—it is extremely bad luck.
• There is actually an official Leap Year Cocktail—gin, Grand Marnier, and vermouth with a twist of lemon.
• Juluis Caesar introduced the first leap year in 46 B.C.
• Leap year babies are called “leapers” or “leaplings.”
• Most people end up working for free on February 29.
• If you want to celebrate this special day in a big way, head to Texas—or New Mexico. Anthony, Texas and Anthony, New Mexico both claim the title “Leap Year Capital,” each holding lavish, multi-day celebrations each leap year.

So now that you have all the “facts,” you must decide what you are going to do with this bonus day! I am hosting a conference on this day. We squeezed in an extra day for the WSC? - Municipal Sponsorship Summit which starts tomorrow and runs through the 29th. It should be fun!

Perhaps you will take the day off. Perhaps you will spend it celebrating with your sponsorship partners. Or perhaps you planned ahead, you feel that February 29 is a lucky day, and you expect several deals to close on this day! Of course, all would be four-year deals to ensure renewals fall on the next February 29. Or perhaps you will just let it pass as another day and not recognize it as something special.
