LEAP-1A Cooling For Maintenance
The engine is warm after engine shut down hindering maintenance to be started without cooling. That is especially for borescope tasks if started with a too warm Combustor / HPT Casing we are ending with damage video borescope equipment.
Engine water wash also require the temperature lowered to get water droplets following the airflow through the core. Too high temperature is just resulting in damp and the cleaning is not effective.
The standard way of cooling the engine is doing dry motoring, but even doing the dry motoring to the maximum we do see temperature and heat soak back resulting in a too high temperature.
The engine starter system is heavily loaded during dry motoring and the temperature for the Air Turbine Starter (ATS) is really getting up doing the dry motoring to the maximum.
The aircraft with a heavy daily utilization is getting to the hangar late in the evening, and the borescope tasks must be started quickly allowing time for any evaluation. That is to avoid us being late with the aircraft from the hangar and having the first flight for the day delayed.
For the above purpose we have tested the FCS Cooling Unit in OSL Norway 22-may-2024 together with FCS.
A full correlation with the dry motoring was performed and all the figures recorded.
SAS Engineering is with the following conclusion:
We are impressed, the cooling unit is really doing the job lowering the temperature to the acceptable level in an hour.
Great demo in OSL thank you for SAS and Safran team of all support.
