Lean Six Sigma in Public Sector: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
I am pleased to inform that the above paper has been accepted for publication in TQM and BE journal, undoubtedly a leading quality management journal in Europe. This paper draws on recent work carried out at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland and led by my colleague Bryan Rodgers which explores the subject of Lean Six Sigma from both an academic and practitioner view and utilizes a similar framework to explore the state of Lean Six Sigma in the Public Sector from its earliest published origins, through the current thinking and develop thoughts on some challenges for the future.
The paper seeks to identify the early discussion on the use and applicability of continuous improvement methodologies in the public sector but additionally present evidence that there remains a lack of consensus over their use. The authors go on to consider how challenges such as the public sector approach of focusing on tools and techniques and quick wins, leaves the credibility of LSS for the Public Sector under ongoing debate.
There remains doubt and lack of strategy, in particular by governments, who have the opportunity and responsibility to shape public services and there is a need for an exemplar in the public sector, an organisation or group of organisations within a particular service who approach continuous improvement from a holistic perspective with long term strategic focus on quality which can show the improvement to public services at best value rather than simply cost reduction.
A copy of the paper can be shared with colleagues once it is published online.

5 年John, yes it is quite different as this is based on the doctoral work of a colleague who is a retired senior figure from Poluce Scotland looking into LSS for Public Sector.

5 年The topic sounds so exciting as LSS in public sector has been absolutely unexplored area. I can’t just express how nice it would be if public sector could emerge as a CI player and how different world would look like as an outcome of that. Exciting even to visualise.
