Lean & Six Sigma ( History )

The history of six sigma was thought of in 1913 by Henry Ford. His initial idea was if you add moving platforms to an assembly line and a conveyor system it would help improve productivity and save on cost. Mr. Ford also recognized when there is a car that is sitting in production for a longer period it cost more money because he cannot produce more production. So, he was the first person to use the Lean concepts of waste and?time reduction to reduce costs.

Six Sigma was founded and used in 1981 when it started with Motorola. Motorola started a television factory in Schaumburg, Illinois. Later that year a Japanese firm took over the factory to help the production process because the defects were too high, and they wanted it to be lowered. When CEO Bob Galvin became CEO in 1981, he made his whole company learn the whole process, so they understood it. Mr. Galvin also challenged his company to be better then ever and because he monitored their performance over the months to ensure they hit each target goal. From 1982 to 1987 Motorola Saved around 1.7 billion dollars using the Six Sigma method and ensuring that all the employees were well trained on the method.

A Motorola engineer in 1985 Named Bill Smith wrote an internal quality paper?demonstrating the relationship between the performance of the products in the field.?And the amount of rework that had been done on it during the production process.?As a result, Motorola management tasked Bill Smith and a recent hire?named Michael Harry with finding practical ways to eliminate defects.?Together, Smith and Harry developed, therefore, a stage problem-solving process of Measure, Analyze, Improve and?Control, or MAIC which would later become the DMAIC model. In 1988 Michael Harry introduced Martial Arts into Six Sigma which would determine the skill set people would have to achieve to get to each belt in Six Sigma.
