Lean Packaging - Flute Sizes
One of the ways that I apply LEAN in packaging is by optimizing pallets. Pallet optimization finds ways to get the highest number of boxes on a pallet given customer storage requirements. Sometimes we can have a little extra overhang while other times we need to change the way the boxes are configured on the pallet. Lately, we've found some optimization by introducing new flutes to get more boxes on a pallet. Pratt Industries offers a new, proprietary flute called "D-Flute" that can increase pallet quantities up to 30%.
How is this LEAN? Higher pallet quantities eliminate waste in inventory, transportation and extra processing.
Inventory: By fitting more boxes on a pallet you can receive fewer pallets, lowering inventory costs, and thus free space on your floor for things that make money.
Transportation: Fewer pallets to handle means less time spent handling pallets and therefore lower labor costs.
Extra Processing: With higher pallet counts, you may order less frequently and therefore spend less time writing and receiving purchase orders.
All of these contribute to eliminating waste and help to recapture profits that your company will thank you for.
